Hi everybody
My Doberman has been getting bald spots, I think it is from him biting at himself, mostly when he is in his create. It seems to be itchy, but it also seems to be linked to his boredom. The skin looks normal aside from some redness if he has been getting at it recently. it happened before i switched back to raw, actually seemed to get better, but has recently made a re-appearance.
I'm thinking of taking him to a vet, i'm pretty sure i will get the old "it's because your feeding raw"... more importantly not the brand they get a commission on.
Does anybody know what might be causing it? or any tweaks i could make to the diet that might help? I know the dobe's can have a genetic skin problems, but i don't know much more than that.
Thanks in advance,
Rob

Rob,
Do you think there is any chance it could be ringworm?
What do the bald spots look like?
Ringworm will typically have a round red ring on the outside of it.
Also, I once had a patch of hair loss on my female when she was 6 months old, and it ended up being the Demodex mite.
I would want a skin scraping at the vet. They can look at it under the microscope and tell you right away if it is Demodex or not.
I would first want to rule out any possible mite or fungal infection first. Especially if it is making the dog itch, bald spots and itching indicate a possibility of either these two things.
As far as diet goes, you have your dog on salmon oil/vit E right?

Where is the itching and bald spots? Can you get pics?
As far as the diet, you already said it. This started before you switched back. Tell doc to stick it in his ear and treat your dog.
I know a lot of folks here have had their best luck going straight to a derm vet with something like this.
Let the vet look, and if they aren't sure of a diagnosis, and don't have the means to do the proper testing, then they should be happy to give you a referral.

i do a Vit e and fish oil about one everyday or sometimes every other day. I will inquire if it could be ringworm as well at the vets.
Thanks everybody and sorry about the blurry pic i couldn't get a good close up of that one.

Hmm, the bald spots look more diffused than a perfect circular.
I would still want a skin scraping to rule out things. Plus, it would definitely give you an answer should it be the things we mentioned.
If you can, I would feed the salmon oil daily as well as the vit E.
The fish oils are especially anti-inflammatory so it should help some.
Let us know how it turns out. I am curious what you find out.

i do a Vit e and fish oil about one everyday or sometimes every other day. I couldn't tell what your dosage was from what you mentioned above.
Just in case, you can give 1000 mg of fish oil for every 10 lbs. of body weight.

Mange check (demodex is not usually itchy, sarcoptic mange is-it doesn't look like either of those in the photo) followed by systemic cortizone or topical cortizone (quiets the skin down) and crate with delicious huge knuckle bone. Maybe clean out the crate really well to make sure it doesn't have gritty things that are irritating his skin on the floor.
The "derm-vet" is a really good idea for a Doberman IMO.

If it were me and I knew there was not a biting bug in the house I would ask about a thyroid panel.
