Hi everyone, I am looking for a sport, other than Schutzhund or Ring, for my 5 month old GSD. I purchased this pup with the intention of a family companion and to use for therapy work, however, he has many unique traits of a good Schutzhund puppy.
I would like to work with him in some other aspect, I am just not sure what!
There are lots of options in scent work for civilians. Bed bug detection, termite detection, blood tracking, shed antler hunting, mushroom hunting(just learned about this one:smile, I've even heard of dogs used to find certain animal's fecal deposits(mainly bats is what I've heard of).
The first question I would ask is: What does the dog like to do? And then find an activity that will work for him.
Does he like to run? Agility or Flyball may be an option.
Does he appear to like OB work? AKC Obedience or Rally may be the thing for you.
I have one dog that does agility, one that does Rally, one that is in traing to be a therapy assistant dog, one that is a champion couch potato, and the new dog hasn't chosen her activity yet. Let the dog tell you what he wants to do, and go with it.
I'm planning on doing Rally, maybe you should check it out.
I think it is a perfect entry point into competition obedience, and you can train for it without it taking over your whole life. It also would not at all be incompatible if you still wanted to do therapy work with the pup, or you could use the strong obedience foundation that you build to get into another AKC sport.
Thanks Michael! Nose work was actually the route I was thinking, I actually have an appointment Sunday morning with a nose work instructor, who “nose” maybe he will be a fungi fanatic!
picking things up for you can be real handy and getting me a beer out of the cooler for me is one of those life essential skills I had to teach....that and the TV remote
