Quesion 1- Does putting a pup outside in a kennel for a few hours or in a fenced yard have any negative effects on crate training? The second queston is out of curiosity. I have read many of the posts in this section and see that many people have problems with their dog going in the crate. Would moving the dog to an outdoor kennel for a while, and forcing him to use his crate as a dog house help with this problem? It seems to me that if the dog had access in and out of his create at any time and was fed from it, that they would prefer not to releave themselves in their own house. If you used one of those portable kennels and placed it on grass, the dog would become accutom to releaving himself in the grass and keeping his crate clean. I realize that not everyone has this option, and may not have an outdoor kennel.

Question #1. . .no negative affects. That is where the dog is to eliminate anyway.
Comment #2. . .that is fine, but one of the advantages of the crate is to confine the dog so he/she learns to hold it longer. Eventually moving to a point of free access to the inside of the home.
If your pup is a crate crapper, you need to let them out more often and start a process of hard core cleaning and letting them out every 15 minutes to eliminate. . .then rewarding for the right pee location. Your suggestion would be a good one for poeple that can't keep an eye on, or can't spend the time with, their dog during the day to help along crate training.
Hey Chuck, When I brought my GSD home I was told to leave her in a crate, so I did. Well a couple of days later she started eliminateing in her crate. (in the garage) So I built a 4'x 6' fence around her crate (made it like a little kennel) with cedar chips outside the crate and she does her thing outside the crate now. Now I've got to get her to eliminate outside when I take her out. But VanCamp has a great answer <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
