My Bouvier bitch is in Canada being bred. This is a first time breeding for both. The bitch is 3 1/2 the dog is 4 1/2. Both titled and hips/elbows/eyes/cardiac cleared.. Anyway The bitch went up the 6th day from the start of her heat cycle settled in well.. She stood for the male on the 8,10,and 11th day.. The males owner is very concerned this is way to early? She also isn't sure why her other 2 males are not going crazy the only one interested is the male we are using.. One of the males is 11 or 12 but has always been her indicator as to when a bitch is ready though I don't believe he has ever been used.. The other is a youngster around a year old.
She's trying again on Saturday which would be day 13.. Her girls and the breeder of mine is use to bitches not being ready until around day 12? Just curious if anyone has any thoughts.. I feel she would only stand if she was ready but I do not have much personal experience to compare.. Thank you.
I've never done any breeding tho I am very interested in it, as I have been waiting a planned breeding for quite some time now.
Anyway, my breeder always does progesterone testing before deciding on when to get the dogs together, as it is an accurate way to assess ovulation. She's a vet and knows what she's doing, which is nice.
I guess if I'd gone to all the trouble to ship my dog to be bred, I'd want something more scientific going on that just when the dogs decide they want to mate.
I hope you get answers that reassure you about what's going on. Just like humans, tho, dogs vary a lot in when things are right to happen, so I don't think you can just go by which day after the heat cycle starts.
I drove my girl to the breeders I decided awhile ago I would not ship a bitch to a male I would drive her.. We talked about progesterone testing but decided with the bitch going up early we would have good indicators and if she didn't stand when we suspected she should we would take her to the repo vet. I don't like to intervene when its not necessary though I no problem doing testing if its needed.

One of my girls is ready about that early, the first time I started progesterone testing that early my vet was kinda of well, it's your money you are wasting........He called me 12 hours later saying can you get her to the male tonight......
They got a breeding on days 8,9,11,and 13 and it sounded like she would attempt one more on day 15 as her older male started screaming on day 14.. The bitch stood for all these breeding's the stud dog owner is very surprised that she stood so early and for this length of time.. I guess we know more in a couple months... Thank you everyone for your reply's.. Jackie
Just wanted to post a update.. My bitch had her pregnancy confirmed by ultrasound today.. did not get a real count but at least 4 pups... Very exciting!!!!
