Just like any other small breed.
Nothing special or different at all from Pugs or any other little dog.
Poor toy breeds are often NOT trained just because they are treated like human babies (often), and then they're often a yappy nervous little wreck. But nope, I've trained pretty much all the common breeds, and aside from allowing for the smaller bladder when potty-training (frequent potty trips), I do not treat them differently. That also means they almost always walk on their own four feet and very rarely get carried around.

Despite appearances (snicker) shih tzus are not idiots. They marker train really well actually. They aren't usually as quick as oh say a GSD, border collie, or Papillon but they can be pretty clever in the league of where I'd put french bulldog. They can be a bit stubborn about doing stuff that makes them uncomfortable like recall across a soggy lawn.
f they haven't bought a mini groom table yet they should no matter if the dog is kept short or long coated. It's important with these guys to start the grooming ritual training early. They should also become well versed in the practice of ear plucking. It's a PITA but the sooner they start with it the easier it'll get.

Shih tzus, poodles, schnauzers all have hair that grows in their ear canals. If left unplucked (as in pulled out) it gets to look like old man hairy ears which has a horrid habit of fostering ear infections. So part of maintenance on these guys is regularly pulling it out.
It's uncomfortable but gets easier with time and lots of ear powder.

I even put them a tad above Pugs. And I am rescue-Pug-experienced. (Many many* breeds would place over the Pug on an IQ chart.)
But I have real dogs and well-trained Pugs.
There is no untrainable breed (that I have ever encountered).

well I'm going to offer to help in training. the puppy was "attacking" a plasitic pail and wanted to chase anything that moved so if they got prey drive and not a nerve bag it shouldn't be too hard
I have friends with a Shih Tzu. The pup changed my mind about little dogs - sweet, smart and very trainable.
Here is a website put together by a gal on my Border Collie forum - she has a BC, but started with Shih Tzus. She runs them in agility and does trick training with them
