Dom has been on raw since last year. He gets salmon oil and E every day. Lately I've been noticing a constant ring of fur around his crate. He's never been much of a shedder but now I've got furry tumble weeds around the house.
Can I help tame the shedding with diet? Is there any point in doubling the salmon oil? Anything I can add to his diet? His skin doesn't seem dry at all.
May just take him in to the salon and de-shed him, then see if it persists.
Any suggestions?

I find it's part of the regular shed cycle on most double coated animals. You should see it cut way back after removing alot of that dead coat then show up again around September-October. With most animals this has to do with light amounts rather than temperatures.

Just sounds like a normal GSD. You could make sweaters with the hair that falls in my house. LOL
If your dog is fairly young, which I think I recall,(around a year) this may be the fisrt time he is shedding an adult type coat. His last coat was a puppy coat. So there is alot more shedding. Welcome to the wonderful hairy world of GSDs.

If you don't already have one, the FURminator deshedding tool is God's gift to GSD owners.
This time of year, when the days get longer, is typically when I have to give my GSD her biannual bath, and deshed her a couple of days in a row.
After that, the shedding is pretty light again until the late fall.

We’re having a real shed fest here too. The young one is actually molting - coming out in layers. It’s patchy and looks awful.
The furminator is really helping this along though. Great tool!!

That's funny, CJ. I always tell my female that she is a 'molting millie' when she is shedding, as she looks like she is molting rather then shedding. She has a tighter coat & that can be why she looks this way. As opposed to my males, who have always just looked more normal with tufts of hair here & there when shedding.
I find that the furminator & the undercoat rake work well. There are times during the shedding process when I prefer one over the other.

Yep Have furminator, rake, slicker, zoom groom, etc. Brush him often. Just really started coming out like crazy lately.
With all the fur getting blown, I wondered if there was something I could add to his diet to help him through the process.
The shedding itself doesn't bother me. I've got 2 long haired cats that throw off more hair that you could ever imagine!

If I recall correctly, FURminator actually makes supplements and treats that are supposed to help.
I have no idea if they work, or if they're healthy. Just something I noticed on their site.

I have been giving my "Hard Keeper" virgin coconut oil to help keep weight on him. I have noticed a real increase in shine to his coat as well as much less shedding. He has a super short single coat so he sheds daily year round.
I just made a appointment for my husky for his bi-annual professional grooming. I think it is the combination of the really good scrubdown, the high powered dryer which blows the loose hair off, and that they use an undercoat rake as well. Totally worth it speed up the spring/fall molting.
I use the furminator at home twice a week to keep the worst of it at bay

Furminator de-shedding solution is a must at my house spring and fall. I have hardwood thru the entire house and boy, do the fur bunnies collect! I also shop vac my dog on a regular basis.
I have a corso, I'd guess with a breed with a coat like a GSD, I'd proly do the de-shedding solution twice in spring.
As far as feeding more salmon oil...I don't know. I do know that I also feed raw and supp salmon oil and vit e and if I run out for a week I really see it.
