He wasn't my dog, but he's the dog my boyfriend grew up with and his father's best friend. Trooper was the first "real" GSD I ever met, eight years ago. He's what I always envisioned in a dog. Calm, stable, fearless, loving. He was like a gentle giant. A big bear. He and Garrett's dad had a lot of great moments and a lifetime of great memories.
He was put to rest today at 12 years of age. His hind legs had stopped working. He was in a lot of pain. He struggled to drag himself around, to go to the bathroom, and we couldn't touch him because he would cry out in pain. It was a very hard decision for the family but they know he's in a better place now. He was such a great dog and had an impact on everyone. Even the kids across the street loved to come see him. I've certainly shed my fair share of tears thinking of him and his family, and visiting him for the last time last night. He never liked hugs, so as much as we wanted to we kept the affection to the petting and let him have his comfort zone. It was hard, but we stayed strong for him.
I know he's already waiting for them over the rainbow bridge, waiting for more of all that yummy people food he'd been getting the past few days. He had a great family and was a great dog, I'm proud to have known him.
Oh man, this makes me want to go out and hug Falcon... looking at Trooper's lightly greyed muzzle makes me think how quickly life goes for our sweet dogs.

Thank you so much everyone. He will certainly be missed on all of our star gazing nights at the beach and every moment we've had with him. We used to laugh at how small Conan was compared to Trooper. He was just such a big old guy.
Definitely give all your pups a big hug tonight. The time we spend with them just isn't long enough at all. All of your kind words make this easier to deal with. It's so hard to know when the decision to PTS is the right one. Ultimately, it was their decision. But they thought long and hard about it. When the time is right I'll send them this thread.
