I'm sure someone here will have good info for you, but in the meantime you can look at past threads on the subject.
Type monorchid into the search function. Expand the date range to newer than 10 years and older than 1 day. Quite a few old thread should pop up.

Yes, there is a chance - occasionally a testicle will drop quite late - but odds are that other testicle is where it is and it's staying there. Did you have plans to show him in conformation? which would not be possible with a retained testicle...
The technical term for this is actually 'cryptorchid', since the other testicle ('orchi') is most likely hidden ('crypt') somewhere in his abdomen. A true monorchid would be born with literally only one testicle... not at all a very common occurrence.
Michael also makes the good suggestion to do some searches for similar threads - there are plenty of people here who have owned cryptorchids or are otherwise familiar with puppy development.

my bf and i were actually talking about this last night, he had a pup that at 4 months had one that wasn't dropped, and the vet was pushing him hard to neuter the dog before he "died of cancer". he decided to wait anyway.
the dogs other testicle dropped a month later.
like was said, there is a chance it can still drop, but i wouldn't hold my breath for much longer, maybe give it another month or 2.

Also, if it looks like there's no chance of seeing the missing nut, it should be noted that any associated increased risk for cancer would really only become an issue once the dog was an adult (a 6 month old puppy is not going to drop dead due to a retained testicle ) - leaving a cryptorchid intact until he's up to around 4 or 5 years old before neutering should not be a problem, if you have reason or want to leave him intact that long, though you do start taking your chances if you decide to wait even longer. I believe Jenni W. waited until her cryptorchid Chi was 5 before neutering him...

EXACTLY.
thats what my bf was trying to get the vet to stop and think about, the dog is a pup, it will take some time for that one testicle to start to mutate, etc.
even if it never drops, you have some time to wait to neuter, many still wait till 18 months or more with no problems.

When you hear stuff like that from the vet, do you suspect someone needs to make a boat payment?

My pup still only has one dropped, and is now 2 years old. I'm not going to have the retained removed if or until I have some confirmation of where it is and whether it is there. I've heard too many stories of vets spending an hour or more digging around in the gut searching for the missing testicle, only to never find it. Per advice of many dog people on this board and after reading online articles, I will probably wait until he is 4 or 5 to consider surgery.
Otherwise, he is a perfectly normal, male dog. I see no behavioral or confirmation issues at all due to a retained testicle. I don't have any plans to breed him due to the genetic factor.
To specifically answer your question. At four months, in my experience, and research, the odds of the other testicle dropping are quite low, though it does happen occasionally. Wait until 18 months or so to totally give up hope.
Lori, did you have Bruno neutered or just leave it be?

It can be a hard surgery, or an easy one, depends on where the nut is, and the experience of the surgeon.
They are hard to find in an old fat dog.
They do cause trouble, but lots of dogs get hit by cars, die of other things, before they cause trouble.
If it's going to come down you can often palpate the testicle's "beginnings" when the puppy is super relaxed (sleepy) by pressing along the groin area or base of the shaft of the penis, pressing gently toward the scrotum. Some will appear up to 6 mos in my experience (which is limited!)
If it was my pup I'd be waiting.
