I am new to this crate training but this is the wildest thing I've ever seen. I have an 8week old rott pup who I thought was doing remarkably well in his house training. He has never pooped in his crate but as of late he will stand on his hind legs against the side or the divider and pee! At first I thought that I just dropped the ball and did not take him outside when i needed too. So I started making it a point to get up at night to take him out and every couple of hours during the day when I'm at home. But he will do it out of the blue when he's been OUt side and done his business. Is this a dominance issue, a lonlyness thing or what? I need you guys to school me on whats going on so i can correct it. It's not funny anymore.
At 8 weeks some pups don't have a lot of bladder control and I would highly doubt it's an issue of dominance.
The first thing I would do is rule out a bladder infection by taking him to the vet. Does he drink excessive amounts of water? How often is he peeing? These are things the vet will want to know.
Cindy , all is fine from the vets point of view as I just had him at the vets for a check-up and vaccinations on saturday. Also he does not get excessive amounts of water. He can hold it all night at times also. But why does he feel he needs to stand up holding on with his front paws and pee? He does not stand up against a tree when he is out side. He squats.? But I'll keep a very close watch and monitor his water. He gets his night meal at 6:00pm and no water there after, just to let you know
Are you talking to him or engaging him in any way when he does this? And does he pee when you come home or when excited. If not.
I am assuming that his urine is landing outside of the area of the kennel he occupies. Crate training is effective because most dogs dont want to be laying or some even standing near there own excrement. So if he is doing this so it lands outside, well he is one smart little man. You didnt drop the ball. Does not sound like dominance or loneliness. He wasnt born with the knowlege that he must hold it. He also doesnt care at this point if it is inside or outside. Crate training helps us get those messages across. Unless of course you have a little Einstien on your hands.
If this is the case I would switch to a all inclosed type of crate. Like a plastic one. Extra money I know but you need one that will limit his space but he can stay in for at least 2 to 3 weeks. Then it will be useless for you as he out grows it. Dont let this guy outsmart you. He is not bad just clever.
PS: Im sorry Melvin but I have to admit I find this very amusing. After you correct it you will have very funny story to tell.
If you know everything you cant possibly learn something new.
Mike, he does not pee when i come home or excited. I have to admit that he does aim it out of his living quarters although he misses sometimes( the stream isn't long enough). As for him out smarting me well his genes are there(as I have watched his mother retrieve her toy from a closed drawer on command). he is going to be a handful as we match wits in the years to come.
thanks for the comments and I laughed out of horror
Melvin, this is an easy fix, quite peeing infront of your puppy! Obviously he is learning it from you. And if you must pee in front of him, go outside on a tree bad joke. I don't know why he would do this besides the little fart is start enough to know that if he does this he won't pee in his area. I had a lab when I was younger that was papertrained, and smart as a whip. If she ever had to go potty and I was in the middle of something, or gone, she would find paper, of any kind and pee on it. A dogs smarts never stops amazing me.

Dee Dee, it's funny that you say that because that's the exact same thing my wife told me to stop doing...But in the mean time he is not going to win this one. Thanks for sharing.
