Hi,
First post to the board. Just received the video "8 weeks to 8 months" and thought it was great help in learning to train my first dog - a 3 month old pug who is very small (~ 3 lbs).
My question relates to the dog's poops. She's very good about peeing when she comes out of her crate, and very good about pooping too - the first time. However, in the morning and in the evening she always has to go more than once and it's always within a short time period. I wait around and watch to make sure she's done, but just when I think she couldn't possibly have any more in her - I see her squatting on the carpet. Four times tonight in less than an hour! It must have been her own weight in poo.
Is this normal? Am I feeding her too much? Too often? (breakfast, lunch, dinner) Breafast and dinner is 1/3 carton of Cesar wet food (1.2 Oz) and a sprinkling of dry food and lunch is about 1/4 cup of dry food.
Is your dog crated at night? If so, is she pooping in her crate?
Also, dogs have to go to the bathroom after they eat, so if you feed her dinner and then immediatley put her in her crate for bed without taking her outside, she still has to go to the bathroom another time.
I would continue feeding her three times a day like you are. A little 3lb. young pup's blood sugar can take a nasty dive if his feedings are too far apart.
The wet food you are feeding is moister, richer and digests more quickly than the dry. I noticed you only have the problem with her during breakfast and dinner- the same time she gets wet food. This could be causing her to poop more than with the dry food. Maybe try mixing less wet with some dry food together.
As far as your food brand choice, the impact may be minimal, but a higher quality & more digestable food brand or esspecially a natural diet, would cause less stool to be passed. This will help reduce the number of stools a day, plus it's healthier. For the small dog you have the price increase would be well worth it and hardly noticable.
Hope this helps!
