Some NON-horse people would be surprized & amaized at what you can teach a horse to do. Not unlike a dog in many ways. 24 years ago, most people were not applying marker training to animals other then dolphins & other sea mamals. That has opened up a whole new world to training any critter in the animal kingdon, today. I recall using treats. But I would not exactly call it marker training as we know it today.
I had taught my young horse how to play 'tag' as a means of exercising him, some of the time, or to play in his turnout without using the bordom of free lounging. I used the command "tag you're it. I taught him to touch me & then run off until I came up to him & then I would touch him & take off & he would chase me & come & touch me & the game would continue. He would follow me around heeling like a dog without a lead all over the place on command 'walk with me'. I would hop off him in the field & tell him to stand & walk around & change the height on all the jumps while he stood there & watched me & then we'd go jump them. I used to often spend my lunch hour hanging out with him leaning against him while reading a book, while he would lay down in the sun out in the field. We have had an incredable relationship that has lasted 24 years. He will turn 29 this summer.
BTW....there is NOTHING greater then riding your horse at the beach! We used to go often. The horses LOVE IT!
Another awesome rider... Stacy Westfall. This video never gets old to me and depending on the hormone levels at the moment either makes me smile or shed a few tears!
She is great! I have seen vids of her before. She is an excellent rider with a very 'natural seat' & balance with a very well schooled horse. They are truly a 'team'.
If you are a very experienced rider, you ride off your seat & legs & not your reins. The reins are of very limited value or need, if you do it all correctly.
