So, we were trying to go through the summer without frontline as it's $60 bucks and I can think of much better things to spend that money on. So far we've done great. Daily tick checks, flea checks, regular baths or rinses, etc.
However... misquitos and biting gnats...the feild is full of them and they attack his inner ears. He doesn't seem to notice (until I clean them, then it's the end of the world), but they are shredding the insides of his ears.
He IS on a heartworm preventative and regularly check for worms (our vet does it for free so we do a fecal when he goes to the vet), I don't play around with that, and he's check for ticks daily all over.
Is there a bug spray or home remedy I can use around his ears? He's getting eaten alive!
You can buy the next size larger frontline and divide it using a syringe and needle getting 2 months worth out of one vial.
You can also get a spray like Adams or Bronco Horse spray (safe for dogs - available at farm supply stores like Tractor Supply) to use when he goes outside. It's pretty inexpensive, less than $10 for large bottle around here.
Go to your local health food store and find a product that has essential oils and says it repells what you want to repel. Spray that stuff on your hands, then rub onto your dog's ears/head. It won't be perfect, but I've found these kinds of products to work pretty well.
This looks pretty good and you can get it on-line at Vita-Cost. It has neem, eucalyptus and citronella and can be used on dogs, cats and kids. (my kind of bug spray )
