When I originally started feeding raw over 10 years ago I fed mostly chicken. I have a grinder and would put all the necessary parts of chix through in order to get a good meat/bone ratio. I would also add other meats occasionally to round out diet. My current dog is allergic to chicken so thats out. Other meats in the stores do not come with bones. Do some of you use grocery store meats and supplement calcium? Also, current dog will NOT eat large bony pieces of meat, he buries them or shows no interest in them. Also noticed tummy rumbling if I give him large pieces of meat, seems to be ok if ground. He has broken a molar on a marrow bone so not sure now about giving those to him for cleaning his teeth. Thanks for any ideas, am currently feeding him Primal grinds so that he has meat/bone ratio but would prefer to get supermarket meats on sale.

There are million options besides chicken. If it's made of meat the dog can likely eat it, just remember variety will come with sale item purchases within reason. Yes, you can use calcium from other sources like chicken egg shells or fresh ground/chipped bone from a butcher.

Supplementing with calcium can be done, carefully. Even though there is a safe range with calcium, it's a mineral, and not something to guess at (not that I was suggesting you would; just being clear for folks who might read the thread).
The 900 mg of calcium needed per pound served wouldn't apply to meat with bone or to eggs with shells or canned fish with bone -- it would apply to boneless meat. So I'd add it while I still had the weight from the supermarket package, rather than per meal. (It's much easier to open and sprinkle 900 mg from capsules* over a pound of meat than to weigh and figure per meal.)
*Ground eggshells contain 800 mg per teaspoon.
PS
The dog did an elimination diet and chicken was identified?
yes sorry should have elaborated, my little grinder can only grind chicken, anything larger won't work. I do get him Primal turkey grind (among others) but if i purchase turkey from grocery store would not be able to utilize bones, thats my dilemma. Also, read somewhere that raw GROUND meats from grocery stores is not safe for dogs. I presume thats because it has been sitting around vs products like Primal that apparently freeze immediately?
