Sounds like there are tons of X-soldiers and service-people on this list.
Since it's Memorial Day, just wanted to say a big thank you to all for doing the hard work so I can be free to live my life and not think of war and suffering.
It's an incredible sacrifice that you guys make, and your country men are super proud and grateful.

Hear, Hear, When my oldest son was in the Army, his unit was lucky enough to go to Arnem on VE day, and they spent a happy and unforgetable day with 1st and 2nd world war veterans, and him and his young comrades came away with a new found sense of thanks and gratitude, it was both sobering and uplifting, and as we were watching the ceremony at Dunkirk yesterday, he told me that on that day the old boys refused all offers from the youngsters at the bar, because they said that they were the next generation to be thankful to, and that it was their pleasure to buy the drinks, Jamie lost a lot of freinds and colleagues in Iraq and latterly Afganistan, so from Britain, thank you to the Americans, young and old, serving and retired, those still with us, and those who gave their lives for us, "at the going down of the sun, we will remember them"

Yes, thank you to all military whether serving currently or in the past. Without you we would not have the freedoms we enjoy.

Yes, I, and I'm sure the others, know what Memorial Day commemorates. But, unfortunately, we can't thank the dead only the living.

Wasn't trying to offend you or start an argument. My parents just raised me to observe a difference between the days. Like I said, I'm splitting hairs. Everyone honors the dead in their own way.

I think that any time that the general public thinks about and thanks our service men and women, is the "correct" day.
I light a candle and say a prayer for our fallen heroes on all of the holidays (including Christmas, New Years, and Easter).. it is how I memorialize their sacrifice. I also do the same for those that are currently serving, as my own little thanks for what they are doing for myself and our country.
Without all of them, living and past, we would not have what we have.

... Everyone honors the dead in their own way.
Yes, on Veteran's Day we have at least one local parade, and tomorrow we have observance ceremonies in two cemeteries, one including a lunch in the clubhouse of an adjoining park, where families of the fallen (and everyone else who wants to attend) can reach out to one another.
It's always great to open the Sunday paper the day before Memorial Day and see the choices of ways to honor those who have given their all.
