I received a call 30 minutes ago about Merlin, one of our wonderful therapy horses at Dream Catchers. Today at around 3:15 he began to show signs of colic; by 6:00 he was on the vet's surgery table (equine emergency hospital). Unfortunately, Merlin had experienced an acute colic attack and 80% of his colon was compromised. The decision was made to end his suffering.
Merlin was a wonderful, calm, gentle and talented horse. His owner is one of our certified instructors and the bond she and Merlin shared was one of those horse/rider relationships which most people dream of.
I realize I'm writing this in a very informative, factual manner, but my heart is anything but... Merlin was simply the most trustworthy, dependable horse I've ever had the joy of working with. So many children and volunteers are going to miss this big guy.

I'm sorry for this loss. Animals like this don't come around often and from what you just wrote, it sounds like the horse not only touched your life but many others as well.

Oh Barbara, I am so very sad to hear this.
It is such a loss, and I am so very sorry.
Just remember that Merlin was an angel who did amazing things for those kids. As you grieve his loss, be comforted that he gave such love and special tenderness to those kids and to you.
Thinking of you, take good care.

So sorry to read this, Barbara.
What a special horse, who made a difference for so many people. He sounds like he was taken care of with the most immediate and professional attention... sometimes they just leave us so suddenly, and too soon. I hope all the members of the riding center have a chance to celebrate his life together and send him off in the grand fashion he was so obviously worthy of.
Good boy, Merlin. You will be deeply missed.

Thank you all... Yes, this special horse will be missed. Merlin was only 17. There will be a Memorial Service and he will be buried on site... I'm sure to some, a Memorial Service for a horse may sound silly, but these animals literally touch our entire community. Merlin would have been working with our new Wounded Warrior riders beginning later this month, so his loss is especially significant.

I think a memorial is a splendid idea. Everyone that was touched by him can hopefully begin healing when surrounded by others grieving for the same loved one. May you all find peace and healing together.
and good bye, sweet Merlin.
