A teen mother and her mother face charges of criminal negligence causing death after a dog mauled and killed a newborn girl on Montreal's south shore on Monday.
The pair were arrested after emergency workers were called to a house in Saint-Barnabé-Sud, near St-Hyacinthe, on Monday afternoon.
Paramedics found the baby girl covered in deep bite marks and scratches. Police said she had been left strapped in her car seat on the second floor of the house when she was attacked.
There was sufficient evidence to arrest both the mother and grandmother, said Quebec police Sgt. Ronald McInnis. Both had left the infant inside to go look at the yard and neither took "care of the baby," he said.
Two Husky dogs live on the property and were roaming freely when the mauling happened, McInnis added.
Both women will appear in court on Tuesday to face charges of criminal negligence causing death.
This is Canadian law we're talking about and the mother is 17... meaning she'll probably get nothing while the dog will get put to sleep.
It is very disturbing to know a mom AND her mother can be stupid enough to let a 3weeks old baby strapped in a car seat on the floor with 2 dogs without supervision.
so the report says that the mother and father of the killed child have a dog, but that it was locked up at the time. So what i want to know is who's dogs were they???
I think the downstairs neighbors owned the dogs, sounds maybe like an open type format housing? I didn't get the impression the 17y lived there at all, unless she lives with mom still...not real sure.
"The 17-year-old mother's family lived in an apartment on the second floor, while the other family who owned the two dogs lived on the main floor."
Doesn't matter whos dog....you just DON'T leave a baby or young child alone...period! I'm sorry, but people that stupid should not be allowed to have a fish let alone a child!
I meant that the charges will either be dropped or she'll plead guilty, at best charges will be lowered in exchange of a guilt plea. This is especially true for Québec where there is a HUGE movement of sympathy toward the mother going "she already lost her baby, drop the charges".

It was the mother's cotenant's. And apparently that guy is an ass too... In a French article here the owner attests that the dogs were never aggressive against anyone, yet a farmer neighbor says that he threatened the owner to get rid of his dogs after warning him a couple times that were roaming off-leash on his farm; stalking his pigs and chasing his cats.
But no matter how bad of an owner this guy is, he cannot be held responsible for having his dog basically fed a baby by his cotenant...
