So I was talking to my neighbor today and he wanted to see my rotti. We were in the front yard and I brought him over on a leash to say hello. Well, Hans immeadiatly walked up to my neighbor and lifted his leg and peed on him. Was this due to his dog's scent (the neighbor has a boxer) or what the hell was it? Needless to say it was embarrasing, any thoughts?

One thought comes to mind. Laughter! Dam that's a riot....
But seriously I know in some instances, and I'm sure it's not yours, dogs will do this as a last resort of calming signals, if your Rott is anything like mine, he just did it to be a prick and let your neighbor know who da man is, and your neighbor is now his. My Rott pees on everything, I mean I can't walk 50 feet without him marking something.

Interesting topic,my wife has a Rott that does exactly the same,he is a well trained friendly pet dog who has a very calm manner and I am at a loss to understand why he has this habit.Like Lonny mentioned he can pee at the rate of one stop per second but why he marks people is beyond me.

It must be a Rott thing. My cousins Rott was neutered at four months of age (he was a shelter dog) and still marks everything including people and other dogs. He's really friendly and outgoing and even dog friendly but does mark way too much.

Karmen, your comments may well be right, that this is a Rott thing as I have never come accross it with other breeds, perhaps a few others may reply and give a different story.

Nope not just a Rott thing. My boy used to do this to anybody sitting down in the grass at the club, dumbass. . . We made a lot of friends, me with my "attitude" and him with his.
Very shortly after this happened they made a rule, not only no dogs loose on the field, at the clubhouse, or in the parking area, but no dogs loose in the back fields either. Ooops. . .

That is too funny VanCamp..
It is not just Rotti's, Shortly after I brought home my male doberman he cocked his leg on my Fiancee (now ex) while visiting his parent's house on Thanksgiving. And who said dogs are not good judges of character.
I also had a little bitch that would mark everything in her path. She knew in order to make her mark she had to cock her leg in front of the desired object.... she rarely ever missed. Walking the two of them together was always fun.

I also had this problem with my previous dog, a doberman/rottie mix. Living in Manhattan, we met all kinds of people, and dogs. Lots of people come up to pet the dog, ask questions about him, want their dog to say hello, etc. EVERY time a person would stop us so their dog could say hello, Max would pee on the dog. The worst was when we were waiting at a red light, and someone next to us was carrying a bag: he would lift his leg and pee either on or AT the bag....that wasn't a good way to make friends in a city known for its "nice" and "tolerant" people....

Well we have now found that it is not just Rotts, but has anyone any idea why?
Is it just a case of anything that does not move if fair game to this type of dog.

Reminds me of a joke:
Lady standing at crosswalk next to blind guy sees guide dog hike leg and wet down his master's trousers. Blind guy then reaches in his pocket for dog biscuit and says "here boy".
Lady says: "I can't believe you're going to reward him for that"! Blind guy says: "Reward?...Uh Uh...I'm just trying to find his head so I can kick him in the a**!!!" :-)
