Hi all, I have been noticing a big improvement in Chico and our relationship, since I incorporated the scooter in our daily exercise routine. I can't walk at a fast pace.
I also been experimenting with high value treat, at least I think so. I bought Salami today, Yesterday I use Turkey from the deli wife was (P.O). combine with my Chicken hot dogs. Plus watching the video on marker training close to a dozen times. OK, OK. maybe a little bit less.
I sent for the two videos with Michael Ellis on food also on tug. Should arrive this week. Anyway I said all that to say, I am please with Chico's progress, not too fast, but he is anticipating commands and trying hard to get the treat.
So any constructive suggestions will be welcome, If not I will be on the same course. Loving my Dog. Dan

Hard to constructively criticize, with no specific information regarding the issues/training/progress. Is there a thread about your dog you can link to? Sorry if I've missed it and the back story is here. I wouldn't feed my own dogs salami personally, but a dash of preservatives and sodium aren't likely to hurt anything in a few pencil eraser sized pieces.
The important thing is loving your dog, and spending the time! After developing a relationship and structure with them, it only gets better! Best wishes, and keep us updated.

How old is the pup?
I worry about running large breed dogs too hard, on hard surfaces, at a young age.

Dan, It sounds like Chico is getting a bit more exercise and learning that you are the source of all which is good in his life - both are excellent! If the scooter you are talking about is the "mobile chair" type and not a small motorcycle type, I don't think you could be running your pup too fast... unless you have tricked out your chair! Wild man Dan...

Yeah, Dan, did you put headers on that scooter?
Sound to me like you and your pup are in "the zone." Good work, Dan.

Good Chip, those salami are for treats, any suggestion on local type deli or meat for treats in training?
I have no back training issues, only those common to pup and new owner. appreciate the response. Dan

Hi Aaron, the pup is four months almost five in a couple of weeks. I use a trail on an army base that is sandy that is my four miles free style as in no leash when possible,my walks in the woods is like baby steps (Multiple spinal anomalies) as with the scooter, we do about 1/2 mile of jog, the rest maybe a mile is walking pace. hard surface, the scooter is not built for off road. Have an opening in the hood, that we trow ball and tug. other than that is my back yard. Dan

I like using string cheese for training. The individually wrapped packages are just right for a single training session--you can bite off little bits of it (if you want to try spitting treats--a technique that gets the dog to focus on your face.)
But honestly, training treats should be whatever is high-value to the dog. If salami gets the job done better than anything else, I see no reason why tiny pieces of it wouldn't be just fine. Or hot dogs, or dried liver, or cheerios. But treats should be tiny--like each one should be the size of a corn kernel. That way you can give lots of treats but they don't become a big dietary factor. My dogs like cat food kibble as training treats. They are tiny, cheap, and easy to carry in your pocket.
Sounds like you and your pal are having a lot of fun--and that's the most important part. Working with him consistenly every day, setting up a few simple rules that he understands, and rewarding him every time you catch him doing something right. That's the ticket.

Hi Rob. I have a pip horn as in sound, and a flashlight type head light. Pray for me, those cars be zooming by. Dan

Liverwurst is always a favorite here, but I don't know if its any healthier than salami. I mix a thick slice of it with some semi soft dog food in the bait bag. It smells disgusting and the texture is kind of nasty, but it gets results! .
Another thought, you could ask the deli guy for the end pieces of the rare roast beef. Customers never want them so you can usually get a deal on it.
