Tonight at about 2am Connie started swallowing rapidly, like something was caught in her throat. Checked the throat, the teeth, the gums, palpated the stomach - nothing. Every 10 minutes she would wake up and start swallowing for several minutes. Shook her head a couple of times and coughed several times. At about 4am she threw up a little of undigested chicken bone from her 5pm dinner. I think all this gagging and swallowing caused her to throw up. After 5am she gradually calmed down and slept. Woke up hungry and happy. Jumping, eating, pooping OK.
What could have possibly caused this? A piece of bone caught in her throat? A scratch from a piece of bone? She had a similar episode several months ago but now every little thing freaks me out. Not planning to take to the vet yet - she does not ride well after the recent events and our vet bills have been astronomical lately.

I'm sorry you and Connie have been going through so much! Did it poss seem like an acid reflux type situation?

Never seen acid reflux in person. Does it sound like it?
The stomach was quiet, it did not contract like when they are trying to throw up, all the action was in her throat. No excessive salivating. She was definitely hungry - led us to the kitchen several times. It was obvious she was uncomfortable during the worst of it - laying on her stomach rather than curled up as usual and looking somewhat miserable.

Did it seem like trying to keep down some vomiting?

No. Absolutely not. Very different from the usual vomiting or trying to.
Over the last hour she coughed a couple of times with very little swallowing. Like she is trying to dislodge something stuck in her throat or maybe stuck to the roof of her mouth.
The only big event I could think of is we had a lemon tree trimmed yesterday and the neighbor was woodworking in his garage - it's very dusty and lemony here.

My best guess would be as you suggested and say it was either a small piece of bone that was somehow caught or maybe scratched her throat, or I also wonder if she got a small piece down the wrong pipe and this caused the coughing.
Just last week, my female got a small piece of chicken bone caught in between her teeth and she kept making a funny, exaggerated facial expression, wrinkling her nose and teeth showing. At first I thought she was trying to throw up, but when I opened her mouth, I could see the small piece of bone and I dislodged it from between her teeth and then she was fine.
I don't blame you Ana, for being ultra cautious after what you went through recently. But given how she was acting later in the day, it sounds like it went away, or got better.
Keep us posted on how she is doing.

Thank you Joyce. A piece of food down the wrong pipe sounds likely. Through the day Connie was swallowing less and coughing up more: *lick* *swallow* *cough* *cough* *retch* - nothing. Transition from swallowing to coughing/retching has been very gradual and there is very little lip licking at this moment. Threw up her chicken soup after coughing at about 3pm and since then it was quiet. Holding her food down so far and begging for more. She is on chicken soup (small frequent portions) and Pepcid AC 20mg x 2/day (just in case). The vet agreed with my plan over the phone. Let's hope it's nothing.
I know that one with the food stuck in between teeth, very funny faces

That reminds me ... something similar happened to one of mine, Leo, a couple of years ago, and he too made exaggerated faces as he tried to work it loose. He hacked a bit too. It was something flat (I forget what it was) that was glued onto the roof of his mouth, and he couldn't work it loose with his tongue. He was very willing to open his mouth and let me pry it off, though.

I would guess with the something stuck to the roof of his mouth or a short way down her throat. Hopefully it was something fluky and he won't have repeats of this.
I have a dog with acid reflux and I board some with it. Those tend to be licking suddenly out of nowwhere or yacking up phlegm. Some give Pepcid, I give tums. Both seem to work.

Whatever it was it seems to have passed. I think it was an irritation caused by all the dust raised during woodwork and tree trimming. Monty coughed several times yesterday. He was only out on the patio for a very short time while Connie hung out with us there. If this is the case it probably won't happen again on a clear day. If this was an acid reflux we'll see it again.
The neighbor is at it again - reroofing this time. He's got home improvement bug.
