I think it's really sad that an organization that's as well-respected as the Delta Society can be so misinformed.
Our local group bans raw diets too. I have had a couple of therapy dogs and really enjoyed the volunteering and visits, but this policy pretty much ensures that I will no longer be participating.
It's just awful that so many owners of wonderful therapy dogs are going to have to make a choice between giving up their volunteer work, or compromising the health of their dogs. Grr...

My standard response to such foolishness: do they allow dogs that eat poop? How about ones that lick their feet?

Honestly misinformed can perhaps become enlightened with the proper negotiation... political sway from a powerful pet food company with questionable intent is another issue altogether, and much more difficult to reason with.

How do they think dogs were fed before commercial kibble?
I'm sure everyone in the past that ever owned a dog was deathly sick, all the time. In fact they were so distraught over their dogs making them sick that, they kept breeding more of them.

I do work with therapy dogs, and was informed of this months ago. I had posted it in one of Kelly's threads. With the therapy dogs, children in my home daily, and pets that roam my house freely, I could go on for days about all the mandated regulations that I must comply with! My parrots, and annual chicken hatch causing avian flu is just one example.

I feel confident that somewhere behind this policy there is a story where a patient was actually endangered by someone doing something stupid. I can't imagine they'd care otherwise what the dog was fed.
Please keep in mind all stupid rules aside that therapy dog is about patients, some of which are VERY sick people with compromised immune systems.

Melissa, yes, this is their thinking with RAW diets.

Better safe than sorry is a sensible policy.
Unfortunately, it may also have something to do with big business as raw diets gain momentum:
Delta acknowledges Purina on its website, displaying the Purina logo under the statement, “Thank you to our incredible partner, the passionate pet lovers at Purina!”
A dog has alot of friends because he wags his tail instead of his mouth.

I just know that if it were my kid, or me sitting in that cancer ward I probably wouldn't be taking chances either. I love dogs, I love what they do for people, and I love the Therapy dog program. I just know that often times dog owners expect the world to bend around them when sometimes, no dogs allowed, or only dogs within certain parameters being allowed is a sensible policy. It is a privilege to be in a TD program, sometimes privileges come with a sacrifice.
