My GSD Drift has been coming to work with me most days. As most of you know, she is an Animal Assisted Therapy dog at a mental health treatment facility for kids. We have kids from age 6 all the way to 18.
Yesterday and today, Drift just really impressed me. We have one young boy age 7 who does not have the best home life. Mom is very critical, and yesterday he got into some trouble at home. He came into the building and immediately sought out Drift. As always, she presented her calm and relaxed self and soaked up his love. I truely think she made is day much better.
Today, the same little boy made Drift a thank you card and thanked her for loving him. She lay down at his feet, and he immediatley snuggled up to her. He kissed her and hugged her and repeatedly said "I love you Drift" and she would lick him each time as if to say "I love you too". Seriously, watching this, it was hard not to cry. This little boy, who gets so little love at home, found everything he needed in this non- judgemental dog. (OK, so now I am crying...)
Days like this make me feel sad, but I am so glad that I was able to bring Drift in and give him a little happiness....
Don't ever underestimate the power of a dog's love.
WOW! I got tears reading this Kelly!
What special dog Drift is and how wonderful Drift was able to give this boy the love and attention he needs.
This story just melted my heart.
Some animals seem to have a special gift for seeing the needs of others and give them something extraordinary.
Thank you so much for sharing this story!
Keep up the great work Kelly and Drift.

That's awesome, Kelly! SO touching. I'm sure a lot of us have our passion for dogs because of the "omni-loving" presence of a dog we were around as children. You can't put a price on that.
I only hope that most treatment facilities for kids have a therapy dog. Drift gave that boy more comfort and acceptance than an adult with the best intentions possibly could and needed no time at all to break through his barriers. All the home protection, commands mastered, CDX titles and so forth I strive for pale in comparison to the value of a hurt child feeling a dog's love. Dangit, I'm near tears now.
Unfortunatley because of confidentiality laws, I can't post any video of Drift with the clients.
If you get the Marker DVD that Ed has done, you will see Drift. She was about 6 months old and completely ignored me, but played with Grandma Cindy just fine
I will work on getting some of my own video though. I repel technology, but I think I can talk someone into helping me.
