I'm thinking about starting Schutzhund obedience on my own.
I have been having a hard time finding clubs around here and my dog really needs something to do! I don't ever need to reach a competitive level of training with her. This will just be a hobby.
We already have good foundations on targeting, retrieving, tug and marker training. We have the start of some decent intermediate level OB down as well.
Can anybody recommend a good book to start out with?
I was thinking about ordering Purely Positive and Training in Drive. Any comments on those?
I have first two videos in the Michael Ellis series and have done some of the work from them, but I tend to learn better from reading.
The closest club that I have seen that is geared toward hobbyists meets in VT. Its Mike Pinksten's club and was started in the Boston area. There is one about 25 miles away from me but from what I know of it is pretty tight knit and more of a K9 club.
I don't care if we ever trial, I just want to do something with her, especially now that its too hot to drain her energy with exercise!
Basic obedience is becoming boring to her. I'm not sure that she would even be all that good at the protection aspects of the sport. Though I do have a trainer friend who has been bugging me to get her on a sleeve.

Gottfried's book, "Training in drive" (I think that's the name) gives a good overall of each exercise. I got a lot out of Ivan's "Advance Schutzhund" also.
The working dog club in Ashford CT should be about a 90 minute drive for you, everyone is welcome. I'm going this Sunday, it's from 4 pm till 8 pm. It's an ego free group of people which makes it unique and fun, lol.
