I am having some problems with Kato after the loss of our other Shepherd. A little background info. Kato is a 5 yr old Hungarian import, he is intact. He has always had a very dominant temperament, except for when dealing with Princess, our 10 yr old GSD. When my son was living at home, he and his girlfriend had gotten a male puppy as a gift. When that dog reached maturity, he started marking in my home. Of course, Kato followed his lead and started marking over where the other dog marked. I started both males back to the basics, crating, no run of the house, eating in their crates, etc. Two months and problem solved.
It has been about three years since Kato has marked in the house. Since the death of Princess, I have come home to my wall in the kitchen area marked on and the living room wall marked. So this last week I set up my web cam to record his behavior while we were gone for about an hour. I was shocked. He paced the house, leaving the camera area to the back of the house and returning approx. every two to three minutes. He was whining quite a bit, but he howled several times at the back door. He has never howled a day in his life. And yes, I caught him marking twice on camera. I know that it is time to go back to basics with him, but has anyone had any experience with this type of behavior?
Sounds like he's bored and frustrated. His source of entertainment is gone. Step up the training and excercise while you go back to the crate training, etc...
Princess passed away on June 19th. Almost a month ago. We are definitely going back to crating. I thought of using the male wraps or doggie diapers but I know from the last experience and Kato's size that it only results in a huge dog with a wet and leaking wrap. What a mess!
