I will be getting a new puppy around Novemeber.... Im getting him from a very respected kennel. Ive been researching her lines. Her main stud dog had to retire. But she has another great stud dog that is showline but show great working line attitude. He has been personal protection trained and is a great dog. The other female that she is breeding is with a stud dog outside of her kennel that is Schutzhund 1 and is a very respected working bloodline. The female that she is breeding i think is showline. I will need to contact her on this. This will be my first time to train a dog for schutzhund and im really trying to find the perfect dog. My question is...Should i go with her other stud dog that is showline but shows a great working ability or should i go with the litter that she is breeding with outside of her kennel. ? Or neither? Ive been reading the debates about showline/working lines on here. I would hate to buy a dog that ends up with little drive. I really trust her and her kennel. A lot of her dogs end up with police departemtns around the world or other special need organizations. they all have solid nerves, great tempermant, and she guarnatees everything. i have visited the kennel several times and im very impressed with the dogs and staff. Hope to here some opinions. Thanks a lot

JMHO... If you are interested in working your dog is Schutzhund, you should only be looking at good, professional, working line breeders. No showline dogs. (I'm not sure a breeder can guarantee nerves and temperment, but perhaps they can...) Can you post a link to the kennel's website?
Congrats on getting a new pup!

Well, you asked for it...
If you are serious about doing SchH, why are you even considering showlines?
It really doesn't make a lot of sense.
Have you spent any time at your local SchH club yet? Talked to the folks there?
It's nice that you have found a breeder you "really trust," but I have to question your reading comprehension if you have read many of the showline vs. working line threads here, and still want to do SchH, and still want a showlines dog .
To each his own, I guess. I sure hope you end up with a dog that makes you happy (sincerely).
If you trust this breeder so much, she should be able to help you decide between the two planned litters.

Just a question, no intent to insult anyone here....
I guess I was under the impression that breeders bred to produce something specific and that is what they are known for (ie. work, show, etc.). And when the pups arrive, they do their assessment of what the pup show their poss capabilities for and then are placed in those approporiate homes. IF they are a stellar pup they go to the place they will shine and achieve titles in that specific area, the rest are placed to homes.

Yes. That's what one would hope. So then it boils down to the quality of the breeder. How long have they been doing this? What are some examples of what their pups and breeding pairs have achieved? If they say the showline dog can do Schutzhund, then show me the titles, baby. The proof is in the pudding.
Right?

So, what is your question?
What you said is correct about good, ethical, knowledgeable breeders.
However, even in working lines, if you're looking for a strong SchH prospect, there is no guarantee that a pup that looks good at 8 weeks will prove out in the end. That's why people always say pups are a "crapshoot."
To look for a "stellar" pup for SchH in a showlines litter is kind of rediculous. There may be a stellar pup in the litter relatively speaking, compared to it's littermates, but the likelyhood of it being "stellar" for protection sports is very unlikely.

I was curious about breeders who breed working line dogs with German showlines. I saw this quite a bit when I was looking for a puppy.
What would a breeder be aiming for in doing this?

When I joined Leerburg a year and a half ago, I was pretty defensive about my German Showline dog's wonderful pedigree filled with tons of Schutzhund IIIs, etc... Of course there are showline dogs (not American lines, IMHO) who have good drive and who can do well in Schutzhund. However, after meeting Dennis and getting to know Erika, I see a huge difference in the drive levels of our two dogs. Could I have worked Falcon in Schutzhund and titled locally, absolutely. Would it have been easier and perhaps a bit more fun with an Erika? You betcha.
Considering the purchase of a showline dog when your intention is to get into Schutzhund, would be like driving a Honda Pilot in Nascar. Will it run? Yep. Will it go as fast and be as fun to drive as a real race car? Not on your life. (Maybe not the best analogy, but you get my drift).

I would assume a "pretty" dog (and Falcon is pretty, imo) with a lower level of drive, and perhaps dogs which are a bit easier to live with on a daily basis, for the average family.
