The fleas here have been miserable, despite daily vacuuming and mopping extra soapy water plus frontline every three weeks we were still getting some in the living room where the dog and cats spend most of their time.
I also don't like to use sprays or powders in this room due to it housing our large aquarium for fear of killing my fish.
So last night I put a shallow dish of soapy water with a candle in the middle of it. The dish was wide enough that if the candle fell over in any direction it would fall into the water!
Well this morning there was more dead fleas than I would have imagined were still lurking in here.
I love that it was totally non toxic and yet still effective!!
Cool, I want to try that....
Ok, dumb question - the candle is buring, I presume? Scented candle, doesn't matter - lit, unlit...?
why does it work? Anyone know?
Thanks for sharing, neat trick
I think years ago I did that with a lamp over the water pan. We had a standard poodle at the time who was prone to the worst flea infestations I have EVER seen!!!
The fleas are attracted to the light, and perhaps the heat. I've done the same thing with a night light, with the cover removed, in front of a shallow dish of soapy water. It works great!!!!
The soap eliminates the surface tension on the water and causes the fleas to sink and drown instead of skipping over the top of the water and escaping.

Hmm... I never would have thought of this. I do put a line of borax powdered soap next to my door frames to discourage ants and other wee beasties from coming in. It seriously cuts down on the spiders in my house.
I hate to admit knowing this, but borax also works wonders for roaches.
I lived in an apartment building a few years ago. Turns out some seriously filthy people lived upstairs and one unit over. They moved out, the super did a deep cleaning of the unit and the roaches migrated to every other unit in the building looking for food.
They had a pest control company conming to spray but it wasn't working. I went online and found natural remedies. I vacuumed and cleaned every last inchr of the place, washed all the floors with Dr Bronners magic soap (they don't like peppermint) and then dusted all the baseboards and corners wiith borax.
It is the heat and humidity combo that is making the bugs bad here too, I don't like using revolution, but if the frontline craps completely out I will be using it next time Nico tracked in some baby flies from the backyard this evening and I almost lost it
Needless to say we pooper scooped!
I would have rather used a night light, but there just wasn't a good way to do it. At least if the candle falls it will fall into water. I did have a moment of panic thinking about a flaming cat running through the house
I bet you could also use a clamp lamp and hang it down shining into the water.
It really does work, I counted 24 in the dish after last night. I am going to put one in the bedroom when I go to work in the morning.
