I have been using Diatomaceous Earth (FOOD GRADE ONLY!) for control and prevention of lice and mites on my chickens. This information says it can also be used for flea control, but ONLY food grade DE is appropriate. The types used for swimming pool filters must not be used. Has anyone tried this for fleas?
Barbara, I use it daily as a food supplement. Neither of my two cats have fleas (and they're outides a lot), my GSD never had them, and my new puppy won't!
I've not sprinkled it around inside, as I haven't found a need to do so<fingers crossed>.
Leih, I think it could also be dusted on a dog/cat which was suffering with fleas and in the carpet as well for a few days, don't you? I know it is supposed to help prevent internal parasites, but I'm not sure how ingesting it would prevent fleas, do you by any chance? My understanding is that it irritates the exterior skin/exoskeleton of the parasite and causes it to dehydrate.
I have bought some, and plan to sprinkle it into the floors then use the broom to push it into the nooks and crannies of our old wood floors.
I just wonder how messy it would me to sprinkle it on the dogs or cats. Or how I would get the cat to hold still while I did it without getting hurt LOL.

You may be too young to remember, but I grew up with "flea powders" for dogs which you would sprinkle on and dust into the coat. It wasn't horrible (probably deadly, but not too messy! LOL!)
I've heard it suggested to put the DE in a old knee-high hose and then lightly shake it over the dog/cat and then work it into the coat. The product is very, very fine. Harmless, if it is FOOD GRADE, but keep it out of the eyes.
I use it both as a part of the diet and as flea preventative. I first discovered it years ago when I had a dog that had allergies to fles and flea products.
Melissa, I've never heard of any problem with the food grade but if you find anything out specific about a portential problem please post it.
Yeah,
Sprinkling it around the house.
Does a wonderful job of covering everything, and I mean everything! in the house with a fine white dust.
Didn't bother me (I'm a slob), but my other half........well let's just say she wasn't to pleased.
