You should definitely go to the vet. This happened to one of our dogs in the past and it's really painful for the dog. They had to cauterize it so the bleeding wouldn't keep recurring, and they put her on antibiotic so it wouldn't get infected. The nail should grow back.

I called the vet and described what happened.
It never bled much..I don't understand that...but OK....
Anyway they said if it's not bleeding that I'm doing all that they could.
I am keeping it wrapped and slathered in triple antibiotic ointment, it seems to help the pain.....if it drys out it hurts.
He is hopping about.....I have tramadol (narc pain med) left from when the coyotes got Java that I'm giving him...that helps a lot.
Poor guy. the nail is just gone.......it hurts him so badly!
He still wants to work though...he tried to put his service harness on by himself.....he got it partially on backwards before it hung on an ear...lol
