I received a PM asking why conformation shows are sometimes spelled conformation and sometimes confirmation, and what does it mean.
My answer was, the shows aren't spelled both ways. They're called "conformation" shows because the judging is based on whether the dog "conforms" to the judge's image of the breed type that's outlined in the breed standard.
I know nothing about showing dogs. So I'm posting my answer here so the folks who do know about it, who do show dogs at conformation shows, can confirm or correct what I replied. Is it more or less accurate?
You are absolutely correct. Just an example of attempting to spell phonetically... Similar to how many spell cul-de-sac... Cultisak, culldisack, coldesack...

It's conformation. And there is no Micheal Ellis either.
But is there a Micheal Wise?
Yes, "Michael" is commonly misspelled. Another couple are phase and faze, which are not interchangeable. "It didn't faze him. He was going through a phase."
Shoot me; I copyedit and proofread animal-care and -training books.
Usually the occasional typo is irrelevant, but "conformation" seems to be important, conveying as it does the goal of "conforming" to a standard.

AH-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I had not run into culldisack, but I love it!
The worse part is, it is typically misspelled by real estate agents!!!! When I am searching the MLS and reading the comments written by professionals and I see industry specific words butchered so frequently I cringe.

Makes us all look bad...
Speaking of realtors, maybe my worst trigger issue with mispronunciations of common words is real-a-ter, or real-a-tor. That added vowel between the "l" and the "t" doesn't exist! It's cringe-making, and realtors are often the worst offenders.
