Hello, my puppies name is Marley, he is a generally healthy pup. He has had 2 vaccinations up to date and is about 5 mths old. He is also on all natural diet. however the other day i noticed his behind his hind legs one of them was swollen, so i figured he got stung, it went down a couple days after that. however i am concerned because there is now a hard lump right where the swelling was, he doesn't seem to be uncomfortable with it though. what could this be?
If he doesn't seem bothered by it, and his temp is good, I'd adopt a posture of watchful waiting and see what happens with it over the course of a few more days.
Puppies absolutely need rabies vaccinations. It is the law. It is also a death sentence for the dog if they are exposed to an animal that may has rabies and the dog contracts the disease. There is no cure. There are many rabies vectors and many reported cases every year. Check with the CDC for epidemiology. Even if it there is only a suspected exposure, local authorities recommend euthanasia. But, minimally a 6 month quarantine will be imposed. Expensive and not very good for bonding.
Well, Jean Dodds recommends 6 months. They need to be at least 3 to 4 months for the vaccine to be effective, there is no point doing it earlier due to their immune system. While they are unvaccinated, there should always be close supervision when they are in areas where they could contact a wild animal or another unvaccinated animal.
