Eddie has been having health issues related to his eating.
He is under weight and no matter what we do, he wouldn't gain much weight.
He has the symptoms of a cat that has a hair ball, but most vets say that dogs don't get hair balls.
My vet thought that it might be the problem, and told us to feed supplements to dissolve it.
Eddie refused to eat the supplements, and since all the experts say that dogs don't get hair balls, I didn't continue with the supplements.
So I have a call to the vet, and am wondering if there is more in there, and how to prevent this form happening again.
I hope that he can start to gain weight now, and feel better.

Well, I'll be darned! Now THIS should be easily treated. In fact, don't I recall using gradually-increasing amounts of good semi-liquid fats?
I'm not a big fan of petroleum jelly ingested, but raw coconut oil might be perfect.
I believe I've read that it should be gradual so as not to trigger a blast of diarrhea that bypasses the mass, but I'm pretty vague. The vet will know.
AWESOME, BTW. I can't imagine a better outcome (literally).
They told me to feed fresh pineapple or papaya to dissolve it...but no go at this station.
I opted for the calories instead of trying to force the fruit.
But now....I need to find something....Connie did you tell me that there was an enzyme that is available?
And what is this about the coconut oil?
I'm really worried that there is more down there......
Since march he has only gone from 77 lb to 80 lbs....despite having free access to the best raw stuff we can get.......(seriously...we even tried fillet Mignon.....)
I have honest kitchen coming in the mail.......I hope that we can move on and get some weight on him!
Vet says he would like to see him @ 100lbs or better.
ETA Just looked up papaya enzyme...some serious side affects....eppp.

There are a couple schools of thought on getting rid of hairballs. One is dissolve the snot holding it together using papaya or pineapple the other is the lube method using petroleum. I know the petro one is favored in cats and the dissolve one was favored in rabbits.
I have no experience with this, but I have an opinion based on human experience.(not hairballs :crazy
If it were my dog, I would do 2 prophylactic doses of mineral oil, 12 hours apart, and then start with a daily small dose of virgin coconut oil 12 hours later. It takes a good 24 hours for the mineral oil to do its magic...(maybe less time in dogs)
I can attest (2nd hand) to the effectiveness of mineral oil getting things sliding, but I won't go into the details!
