So, Paul went looking for some new home insurance since we bought some new land and he wanted it covered (and thought he could get a good deal elsewhere). He goes to town to a place not far from where I work. Talks to the lady, and seems all set to get insurance when she asks about dogs.
Yup, he says, got 5. 2 Malinois, 2 Labs and a German Shepherd. Lady says sorry, we can't insure a German Shepherd and that's the end of the paperwork.
This is DRIFT we are talking about. Paul says the dog has her CGC, soon to be TDI certified and works with mentally troubled children daily. He told the lady she is welcome to go see Drift at work, and interact with her. Nope, sorry, can't do it, good bye.
This is the first time something like this has hit me personally. Paul called and told me and I was stunned. This lady apparently didn't care about the Mals.. they weren't on the list. Didn't even care that we had HORSES. The deal breaker was Drift.. the most sweet and loving animal I have ever met.
Sorry for the rant, guys, but this just really chapped my hide.

My brother got this with his black and tan dog Cameo. He had to go through about 5 agencies before he found one who was willing to accept black and tan dog because black and tan must mean rottie or doberman.

My daughter has rescued a very lazy, loving 1 year old dog. She was told it was an American Bulldog and does have that reflected on the dog's license in Albuquerque. Problem is, it looks pretty much like an over sized pit. I live in Denver where Pitbulls are banned, and my daughter is afraid to bring Mikey here in case he gets arrested by the doggie sheriff for his looks (certainly not his behavior).

I'm sorry about that. I wish many people didn't have to deal with all that bs. It took me a minute with insurance too before I found one that would work with me.
Marcia,
In that case, are all pits brought into the city confiscated by the authorities if caught and put to sleep or what? I don't blame your daughter but I would be so torn.

Paul doesn't know that this kind of thing is out there, so he answered truthfully. The insurance guy we have is great, and the dogs (even Toni) like him, but Paul thought he could get a good deal somewhere else. He got an education if nothing else.
I have to wonder if any dogs have lost their homes because they weren't insurable. Crying shame if even one had to be taken to a shelter because of stupid crap like this. Complete BS.

You need to be careful with something like this. When my brother was interviewing with All State they wanted photos of the dogs on the property. They also stated they wanted to be notified when they got new dogs. Eeech....
Also they could take what you call mutts as a deception and refuse to cover your claim even if it was not dog involved. Better to be truthful and find out your insurance companies true colors than get tied up with lawyers for months.

Screw home insurance companies, they punish the careful and reward the reckless ie the boneheads that build on earthquake fault lines, flood plains or on the beach that get hit with hurricanes every five/ten years. I've been paying HOI for over twenty years and filed ONE claim for less then a thousand. I could of taken that money and BOUGHT a house on the beach along with the house I have now

I have a "husky mix"
my complex bans anything with pointy ears that's not a husky....I brought him to the office when I signed the final paperwork (with mutts the final say goes to who's on duty when you sign your lease)....the conversation went as follows
Her: hmmmm....how about a lab mix?
Me: What?
Her: Naaa, that wouldn't explain the pointy ears *checks clipboard in her hand*
Me: ???
Her: What about husky? They don't have a rule against huskies!
Me: Sure?
Our complex also will not allow Boxers, Dalmations, Pugs (we say they're puggles and that's okay O_o), or anything with the word "bull" in the name or looks like it could have "bull" in the name. Also no dobermans, rotties, german shepherd (or anything with "shepherd" in the name that has pointy ears), anything who's ears are often seen cropped, anything who's ears are pointy and weigs more than 15lbs ...unless it's a husky of malimute....or a mix of any of those dogs...
