I have 5-yr old 80 pound female Giant. I live in the NY area, Long Island to be specific. I need to board my dog. My trouble is the vaccinations, as I only get my dog rabies every 3 years, which is all NY requires. Of course, all of the boarding places I've contacted keep multiple dogs and require all the shots (parvo, bordetella, etc.). I'm trying to find someone who boards dogs in their own home, 1 at a time, and isn't concerned about all the vaccinations.
We used to leave the dog with my sister in law, but she moved out of state.
I've had excellent success with finding a house sitter to come stay in the house. There are sites on the web (and YES you have to be careful and do your homework) which put people and houses together. We've done it twice and had no complaints what so ever.
Have you checked into someone who petsits? I have a friend who has a business (she is bonded, etc.) petsitting and obedience training here in NC. She goes into client's homes to feed and exercise. I believe she does extras (long walks) for extra $$. You might find someone local.
Which way are you headed John?
I know of a small kennel in southern Maine that feeds their dogs raw and will do so for boarders as well. I sure vacs are kept to a minimum, if memory serves Rabies and kennel cough are the only ones she's interested in.
Be glad to let you know the specifics if you're headed this a way.
Ugh...It stinks boarding your dog! Call your vet or vets near you, many have staff members that will do home visits for walks, feeding. If staff doesn't do it, they usually always know those that do. Schnauzers are great, giant or miniature!
We're not headed up to Maine. Believe it or not we're spending a week in Manhattan. Seeing all the sites we've never seen as locals, and going to shows, museums, etc.
I have been reluctant to have someone in my home, but it looks like that's what we may have to do. I've seen some of those websites, if there are any in particular that you can receommend I'd appreciate the referral.
Whoever it is that stays at my house would have to be pretty confident around big territorial dogs. If they ever leave my house to go to the store or something I'm not sure how they'd get back in! They'd have to get back into the house through a barking Giant
I can just imagine the phone call "please come home from vacation, we can't get back into the house".
