Life has been just too tranquil lately; wasn't meant to be...
It was 6:30 this morning, and I was getting Chula ready to go on our walk. The routine is that she sits at our door (inside), I go outside to grab the long line (it's normally curled up just outside the door), then I attach it to her prong and backup collar.
There's a lady down the road who walks her chihuahua at around the same time, and I always look up the side walk to make sure that she's not right there; Chula has a 'thing' for small, barking dogs. I looked and didn't see her...
Well, while I was attaching her long line my back was turned to the street and the lady came down the sidewalk with her dog. Chula saw her (the dog), and made a beeline to her, picked her up and shook her. At about this time I reached her and grabbed the long line and she dropped the dog. Lots of unpleasant noises coming from both animals and both humans...
In the process, the lady fell on her backside. I took Chula back in the house and went oustide to assess the damage.
Dog- 1 puncture wound under the armpit, couldn't tell how deep. Possible back injury from the shaking.
Lady- a couple of scrapes on her hand...
Me- Ready to have a nervous breakdown
The lady is taking the dog to the vet, which of course I will pay for. I will also pay for the missed day of work. I am praying that this doean't turn into a back injury issue.
I'm not really looking for advice; I know what I did wrong and it won't happen again. The whole thing just sucks though...

Sorry to hear about what happened. Just stay calm and deal things as they come to you . That is the best you can do. Hopefully your neighbour will be gracious enough to understand that it was a mishap.

OH hon,
Stay calm, you are handling things the right way.
I would check on the dog and owner later to see if they are OK, and to see if there is anything else you can do.
Flowers MIGHT be a good idea too.
I would keep a journal of everything that happens..just in-case you need to recall details later. Write each conversation down while everything is fresh.
I'm so sry that this happened.......
Hugs.

We had three particularly yappy fuzz balls that the owner would walk by on flexi leads and would let them come right up to our fence. These uncontrolled, unruly and extremely noisy dogs always set my boys off. I stopped her one day and asked if I could go for a walk with her. Of course she was concerned that my boys would eat hers. I mentioned that I would walk on the other side of the street until they became comfortable with each other.
My boys heal wonderfully however I was concerned with her leash control. We set some ground rules… No. 1 was that she controls her crew as not to come in contact with my boys. We had a great discussion along the way and it turned into quite the information and training session. We discussed how her dogs’ behavior could potentially get them into real trouble and how more control on her walks would also help with some behavior issues she was having at home.
We did have an incident - she became quite tangled up in her own dogs and fell. I think the embarrassment as well as the realization that she wasn’t under control set the stage for changes I see today.
Although I would not want this to happen to anyone, I was so relieved that it happened with my boys under full control.
Lynne, I’m so sorry this happened. You will get this through this. Chula was just doing what comes naturally to predators. Desensitizing, training for and eventually eliminating these reactions is a real priority for me, however, there is always the unexpected that we can only hope turns out okay.
Best of luck with this.

So very sorry Lynn... I hope everyone heals just fine and is as gracious to you as you are trying to be with them, under these very uncomfortable situations. I hate learning lessons the hard way... I really, really do.

I second all of this. What a huge bummer... but, as they say, stay calm and carry on...
Fingers crossed that the injuries (little dog and it's owner) are minor enough not to provoke litigation of any kind - your proactive offers to recoup vet and lost wage expenses should mean a lot to this individual... not sure if you know any lawyers, but you might want to consult someone also, just in case.
So sorry you have to deal with this...

Sorry to hear that. It is so disheartening when stuff like this happens.
I will pray that all ends up working out peacefully.
Stay calm.

Thanks for the dose of optimism, eveyone. I needed it.
I just got a call from the owner, and the dog is being kept at the vet's until 5:00pm, but apparently she is fine. They found another puncture wound on her back, so the vet has treated that also. I will meet them at the vet's this afternoon to pay the bill and see how the owner is doing. She says she is sore, but otherwise OK.
I hate learning lessons the hard way... I really, really do.
Barbara, I can't tell you how apropos your comment is. I'm what I would describe as a novice dog trainer, but I really felt like my dog management skills were top notch. This is a terrible way to realize otherwise...
