Wanted to know if anyone here has experience getting their dog's tooth / teeth crowned after a break. From what I hear this injury is fairly common, especially if the dog is doing any serious and/or regular bite work.
I'm asking because I have a 3 year old GSD that cracked his lower-right canine last spring. It was root-canaled immediately, and my vet-dentist said he wasn't beating up on it (examined it after 3 mos.).
I'm just wondering mainly - how reliable / sturdy are the crown replacements? I don't plan on doing serious bite work with my boy - just basic retrieves for obedience. I do use tugs as a reward on a regular basis, but nothing near the level of a K9 or Schutzhund dog as far as tug intensity goes.
I was told it wasn't absolutely necessary, but I'm considering it to protect what is left of his tooth (which I am told, because it is now a dead tooth, will weaken over time).

My granddog Milo, a Border Terrier, had it done when he was 2, at Tufts. He is now 13. It has held up beautifully. It was spendy, but for a two-year-old, it seemed worth it. I'd say it was.
One of my dogs had a crown installed on a molar about a month ago. Slab fracture, no pulp exposed, no root canal, opted for the crown to protect the tooth. The dentist warned against giving her hard bones (chicken backs/necks fine). She said in their experience the dogs that come back with crowns missing usually chewed their way out of crates or otherwise bit very hard on inappropriate items.
Thanks everyone, sorry for the belated reply. I am going to have Rocco fitted for the crown next week. It'll be put on in September, I'll post some before & after photos here too.
