Ok, So I have a great contact here at work that can get me Orijen Kibble at an amazingly low price.
He doesn't have all the varietie's but does have the
Senior & Large Adult.
Now, Tucker is now 10 (*sigh* they grow up so fast)
and other than a little bit more white hairs creeping into the black fur around his eyes....i don't notice him slowing down at all. We still walk the same distanc and same length of time with fetch at the park or a long hike in the valley.
So with that being said...i know that outside he seems to not really be aging that much, but his insides might be a different story.
So, should I switch him up to a Senior type food, or just stick with the normal Large Breed Orijen?
Thoughts? Questions? Concerns?

I've never looked closely at the differences, but I've always been told don't waste your money. I don't know about Orijen, but other brands just monkey around with the fillers.

well, i can get either one for the same price.
i did a quick comparison on the Dog food Analysis site and i did notice that the senior contains more Condroitin. I know that is a "go with" type of thing for Glucosamine. I do worry about the joints and arthritis as he gets older. I had to put my last dog down because of severe arthritis. And it wasn't until it was pretty far gone that someone mentioned Glucosamine to me...so kind of too little too late. So i promised myself with Tucker i would definately supplement him with glucoasmine.
But i found that glucosamine in the powder or pill form doesn't agree with him at all. It will give him diarrhea no matter how small an amount i use or how slowly i add it. But if it's processed in with the kibble it doesn't effect him.

I don't mean to sound too cynical Wendy. I feed kibble to two of our dogs, but I always have doubts about some of these special formulas and the added in things like gloucoasamine, whether they will actually be of any benefit.

no, i hear what you're saying.
Im just not sure what other way i can get the glucosamine into him. And after what happened with Taz....Im on a mission to make sure Tucker doesn't suffer the same fate.

Check the ingredients and nutritional analysis. Senior foods normally have less calories (for less active senior dog) and lower protien levels (to not strain aged kidneys). Do your research; there are opposite views on protien levels and their affect on older dogs kidneys. FWIW, with my last senior dog, I kept him on regular adult kibble (wasn't feeding raw back then) and supplimented with human glucosamine/condroitin tablets. Did not change him to a senior. If I had it to do over again, might do some things different, but still wouldn't change him to senior.
Food for thought. No pun.

lol...thanks Sal.
the orijen senior does state it has less calories and lower protein levels.
i think i might just keep him on the regular and try to find some sort of glucosamine supplement that agrees with him.
maybe a liquid.

And I can be a little sarcastic too. No really, its true. What I would wonder about is it not affecting him in the food, is it enough to benefit him? Is it just going through him? I know why you want to give it to him, how about in a formula of glucoasamine/chondroitin ? Have you tried the combination of them like that?

yeah, the pills i have is a combination of both in a capsule.
I was just opening the capsule and sprinkling the powder into his dinner.
hmmm...maybe that's the problem....
maybe i should try them seperately.
and i never thought about the whole "not effecting" him aspect when i give him a food that is suppose to contain the Glucosamine.
That's a good point.

I thought I read some where that the baked in glucosamine was worthless and minimal effectiveness when sprinkled on post kibble making. So my first question would be to look into how or when it is added to the kibble. Also read somewhere that the liquid is better absorbed. I'll keep looking, but I can't rememeber where I read these things...
