I bought a stall mat (4'x 6') with the intention of cutting it into several crate mats. It is a very economical solution, and since I have a jig saw and appropriate blade, the cutting shouldn't be much of a problem.
However, it stinks to high heaven! Rubber smell galore. I haven't cut it up yet, so can still return it if I decide to do so.
Now, LB has the rubber crate mats and they look really nice, but man, are they pricy! It's the shipping that kills you. But, if they didn't smell as bad, it might be worth the additional expense.
I'll be using these inside my home and truck. So, it's not like they'll be used in outside kennels or a barn or whatever. I really don't want my house to smell like a tire factory.
So, does anyone have experience with either of these items? If yes, does the smell go away over time, or not?
I bought a LB rubber mat a month ago (24" x 36") and use it inside the crate (and also in the bathtub when we gave Louie a bath). If you put your nose a foot away from it you can definitely smell the rubber, but other than that I can't really smell it. I've never dealt with a stall mat so I can't compare the 2. I can imagine such a large piece of mat 4'x6' would smell much stronger since it's so concentrated. Maybe once you cut it up and spread it out to the various spots you need it it won't be so potent.
Honestly when I was doing research I thought the stall mats and LB rubber mats were much of the same besides possibly thickness . I just didn't have the tools to cut it up (also lazy) and shelled out a little more for the LB custom cut mat.
The odor does go away. I have one in the back of my car in the crate and one in the indoor crate as well and don't notice any odor at all. I didn't do it at the time, but a good scrubbing with a detergent might help ease the smell a bit.
They are heavy too, but I love the non-slip surface and sound buffering they provide. Plus they clean so easily.
I think LB buys larger cow/stall mats and cuts them up. I believe that's what is on the site.
I remember in one of the LB videos Ed talking about the cow mats. Until then my new fosters and young mouthy pups were on the hard surface of the crate. not anymore!
Put it out in the sun and the smell will go away.
They loose their smell pretty quickly in the barn or trailer-(Maybe other smells become dominant!) Seriously, I think the smell vaporizes away quite fast out in the elements.
