We are living in a camper in a compound right now and there is one adult dog here lose that has followed me like a shadow since the day we got here. There is a family that found a pup around 3 months old and decided to keep her. They had her tied for one day than let her lose saying that she is used to the place now. Where do you think she is??? I have two shadows now not including my own! Oh I forgot the stray that came by to also followed me around till he was gotten rid of. Why does every dog follow me around? I have done nothing to make them follow me. I have not feed them and have not done more than pet them a little and say something to them as I pass by (like talking to myself looking at them). Are these strays as you might call them looking for structure or what? No one really takes care of them. Someone different feeds them daily. This happens most places we go.
Maybe it is a pack structure thing, or maybe you have that same invisible neon sign on your forehead that only dogs can read. I think mine says something about free food and come inside where it's air-conditioned or something to that effect.
I have not feed them and have not done more than pet them a little and say something to them as I pass by ...No one really takes care of them. Someone different feeds them daily. This happens most places we go.
I don't know if you look like a dog , but you answered your own question.
"Petting them a little" and talking to them is probably more positive attention than they ever get; why wouldn't the follow you? I would, if I were one of them!
I have the same kinds of experiences and I don't feed them OR pet them. I think some people are dog-magnets for some reason I have yet to figure out.
At the last puppy class I took, all of the more insecure puppies tried to hide behind me, even though their owners were present. I don't get it, but I would be interested to know if there is any actual, tangible reason for "dog magnetism". My sister has 'it' too
I'm always getting the "He/She doesn't normally act like this with strangers" comment.
I think that most of the people on this board are the kinds of people that will attract dogs, even to the exclusion of the dog's owner/s.
I think most of us know intuitively, even before coming here, that most dog owners do not give their dogs the needed levels of attention/affection/stimulation. So when dogs owned by those people catch a glimpse of a truly good dog owner, they are instantly attracted to them.
I gave no reason (at first) for either dog to follow me so I am thinking they are looking for a leader. I was even mean to the male when Zuki was in heat and he loves me more than ever! I have started doing a little marker training with him since he hangs around all the time. I really would love to take the pup back to the US and find her a nice home.. She is so skiny and the family that found her is not being nice to her or feeding her.She is GSD and weighs 22 lbs at 3-4 months (that is my guess at her age). She is so sweet, it hurts to see others not value their dogs.
Now I wonder, and this is just an over-the-edge idea. Would a dog be able to recognize from the way a person carries himself/herself if they have enough food in the house? I mean in Eliza's case where she is in a country with extreme poverty. Do we have different body chemistry/posture whatever else when we know there is enough food versus continuously living on the verge of starvation? Just a crazy thought.
