Hi everyone!
My name is Kelly, and I have a 1 yr old DS rescue. Koenig was tied in a back yard for the first year of his life... turned out his owner was 'out-dogged' and he surrendered him to a local rescue I work at (www.furrytalefarm.org) He's a lot of dog, but has come a long way in the 3 months I've had him. We are in NW Washington, and looking to start schutzhund training after I get his heel and recall proofed. He's the first purebreed working dog I've owned, but I've had some intense high-drive mixes, and I'm really looking into the adventure training this dog will be! Koenig is far from a perfect DS- he's just over 80 lbs, has dewclaws , and white marking on his chest. He's a very very dark gold brindle, and in his summer coat the brindling is hardly visible. I get lots of 'Is he a GSD?' comments. Glad to be a new advocate for this amazing breed!!
I've been lurking on this site for quite some time, decided I needed to join and introduce myself, and add to the convos when I have applicable knowledge. I'm a vet tech, with years of exp in rescue work. Trained my last GSD mix in RallyO and had a great time. Played in agility, and I'm considering it as some additional work for my DS.
I'm happy to see there is tons of wonderful knowledge that is around on this forum!
Welcome Kelly! Koenig is a really handsome dog and sounds like he is lucky to have found you! I'm not sure you need to wait on beginning your Schutzhund work until his recall is good - I think you can begin with zero skills and benefit from the trainer's expertise! Go girl.
You may need to resize your two top pictures - this can be done on the site which they were uploaded to. Just make them a bit smaller and you are good to go!
Thanks for the advice Barbara... I've never done schutzhund, but been a follower of the sport for years- was just waiting for 'the dog' to do it with! I'd always thought I needed to have all the basics done on my own first- but I'll try and hook up with the local club now, if they are ready and willing to deal with newbies!! Koenig is still working on maintaining eye contact... it's been my hard spot.
I'll try and resize the photos.
Michael,
Thank you!!
And THANK YOU! I'm pretty proud of him! I wish I had the opportunity to raise him from a pup, but he's got solid nerves and drives considering the situation he came from, so best case scenario with what was presented to me. (And I got a expensive dog for free )
Athlete is an understatement... lol. This is a dog who (with no training) jumps an 8ft fence, just for the fun of it. Ugh. He's a pain to keep contained. He fits the bill of a DS to a 'T'
