One of the articles on this site is about chows, and I am wondering why they are fundamentally different enough to have a breed specific article written about them? There don't appear to be similar articles on other kinds of dogs.

I didn't read the article, but I could guess what it said. IMO, many of the japanese breeds have similar traits. I have known Chow's and Akita's that were the best pups you could ask for,no chewing, mouthing, very obidient as they mature, so they appear, push their buttons, could be silent death, they usually don't give warning. I do think they are beautiful!
I have found them to be the MOST aloof, single - person types of dogs (Chows and Akitas) as a whole, compared to the other dogs I've known. (Yes, I know - nothing scientific about that statement...) As puppies, I'm very comfortable around them. As adults, I respect them and give them a wide berth.
I've found this site to be reasonably accurate in it's assessment of various breeds. Chows are beautiful dogs but tend to be extremely one person dogs, very territorial, and independent.

I work at a nursery (plants, not babies) and the owner has several dogs, including a senior chow mix.
When I started there, 8 years ago, I gave this dog wide berth. She was completely unreadable (to me, anyway). No tail wagging, a very hard stare and no ear language that I could recognize. Great with her own family, which incudes 2 kids that grew up with her.
She actually seems to have mellowed in her demeanor as the years wore on, and will now come to me looking for affection, and wagging her tail.

The american akita is a very different animal temperament wise from what most people here in the states are used to. Some of what American breeders have done to these dogs in crossbreeding has destroyed the solid temperament and while it has created a flashier animal the japanese akita tends to be a much more stable temperamented dog.
I've met some very friendly expressive chows. They are the minority of the chows I have met though. Unexpressive, undriven, and willing to take a solid swipe at you with little to no warning. Very reserved around strangers until they are pushed which I have the unfortunate job of doing as a groomer. The only breed I know of as weird/volatile in this way are shar peis.
