I have a female Boxer a bit over 4 years. She's pretty obedient but my problem is that she's not naturally protective at all. She gets extremely excited around strangers but is never suspicious. Honestly I'd like a dog of her size to at least deter an intruder, but she never even barks unless teased for treats. Can anyone suggest anytime of training that may make her a bit more protective?
You could always consider training a command work like 'easy' to get her to go crazy barking and growling. Easy to shape with treats and a tug to tease her. Get her worked up, mark any barking, etc. Scary stranger comes up- tell her ______ (name) EASY. She goes crazy acting aggressive (or excited for a treat- many people may not be able to tell the difference). Scary stranger, deterred!
I don't know much about protection training- In my limited knowledge dogs are born with it, or are not. I know for a fact though that there are people around who can help you here. You may want to try the Personal Protection Dog (PPD) forum... may find some more specific info there or by searching archives.
