This is probably a dumb question.....
Is playing keep away always a bad thing?
He has this little game he likes to play whenever he has a toy or something else of value.
This is his game that he teaches to new people and the only play he ever really instigates with us.
It is basically him showing you the item while wiggling expectantly and wanting you to pretend you are going to take it from him.
You try to take it and he ducks his head or spins around or some other evasive manuever.
If I really wanted it he would give it to me, and I can reach in and take stuff out of his mouth and throat if I have to.
I have had several people tell me that it is dominant and/or aggressive behavior which I find laughable when referring to this dog, but I still was nagging in the back of my head so I thought I would ask.

I'm no expert, but it seems like a nice way to ask for play. He's not jumping up on people or other things, he's bringing a toy entice you to play. If you can take the toy any time, without negative reaction, he seems like a pretty well mannered dog to me. JMO
That's what I ask for from my pups when they want to play..

I agree, seems like a pretty good problem to have. My GSD would do this, and we both knew she was 'just kidding' and that I could stop the game by getting serious about taking the toy, or ignoring her until she came and gave it to me.

I don't really see it as a problem either. My dog will do this too, but will "out" if I ask him to so I know it's not a possessive thing.
I think it's kind of cute, actually; the wiggly 'come get it' invitation to play. I will chase him for awhile, then he'll drop the toy. Then I pick it up and he'll chase ME for awhile. No harm done, just a fun game.
Maybe it would be a problem if you had rank issues with your dog, but it doesn't sound like that's an issue at all.

Oh good.
I thought it seemed fine too, but I am prone to being very wrong
When two separate people, who are actually pretty dog savy tell me it's bad I worry a little.
It is a very gentle game too, if I try to tug or get too over the top playing he will humph at me and go lay down LOL.
He tries to play it with Nico occasionally but she just takes the toy and lays on it so he can't have it anymore. It is pretty funny to watch his reaction to that

lol...when i first read that I thought it said "hump" you and go lay down...
now THAT I would have a problem with.
and no, i do the same game with Tucker. It always amazes me how quickly he can turn on a dime playing keep away.
As long as he will bring the toy to you & release it when you want I think it's a fair game.
Don't complain....TRAIN!!! |

Sounds absolutely adorable! I love to watch these kinds of behaviors, it just makes me smile and laugh!

I get a lot of that sigh and sulk sometimes too, with my female who wants to play all day. At some point, I have to make her stop and go lay down. But the vocals just make me crack up!

My son's Border Collie mix is an absolute virtuoso of using the keep-away as a game to lure a human into playing. He'll grab some object, walk up to you as in "here, take this and throw it for me," then ZOOM off with the thing in his mouth. Then he'll approach again from a further distance, do a play bow, toss the object in the air, catch it, and ZOOM, off he goes again. Eventually, if he really does want the object thrown, he'll come drop it at your feet. Makes me laugh as I'm typing this..
A dog has alot of friends because he wags his tail instead of his mouth.

I am glad I asked even though I felt silly for asking.
I am guessing this falls under the same category as those people who tell you never to play tug with your dog because it will make them aggressive or dominant.
It really is fun to watch and fun to play and I don't want to squash his re-budding joy and sillyness.
