Hello everyone! I am a long time Leerburg customer who needs some k9 diet advice. I found out my 2 1/2 year old GSD was very allergic to commercial dog food, so I made the switch to raw meat about a year ago. His health ( allergies, teeth, coat etc) is WAY better now than when I was feeding him Solid Gold, which is great news. The problem is I have only been feeding him Chicken breasts, ground beef, ground turkey… IE nothing with bones in it. This is really hurting my pocket book ( most breasts are about $3 a pound, as opposed to 99 cents for thighs), and I want to include some more raw bones for the health benefits.
Any advice as to what I should start him out with? He does get a lot of cow knuckles and marrow bones, but that’s it. Should I start with wings, thighs etc? He can be a MAJOR gulper, so should I factor that into it as well?
Thank you all in advance for any advice!!

How long has he been eating like this?
And have you been doing ANYTHING for calcium?
A diet with no calcium is a ticking time bomb.

I just read back through your post.
Has he been eating a boneless, calciumless raw diet for a year?
Not jumping on you, but we really need to know.
If so, I really don't know what to do.
I almost think you would need to go to a vet, let them know what has been going on diet wise, and let them do any and all necessary wellness checks.

i supplement with fish oil and vitimin C as well. Also, i should have been more clear on my 1st post. The boneless meat was mixed with Sojos dehydrated grain-free mix.
I also take him to vet regularly for check ups

Somebody told you wrong. BAD wrong.
I really don't know, man.
I'm going to hold off until some more experienced folk get here.
After a year, I don't know if you should simply start feeding properly and start there. Or try to find out what damage could be done.
Not trying to freak you out. Promise.
One thing is certain. You absolutely cannot continue with this diet as is.

As far as I know, knuckle bones and marrow bones are not consumable and considered a recreational bone.
I do not know the nutritional content of the marrow.
But if you stopped feeding the sojo's and went to straight raw,
you certainly need calcium and phosphorous, which is perfectly supplied in consumable bones like chicken backs, necks, and leg quarters. Turkey and duck necks are good as well.
If you want to try feeding the whole chicken over a few days, then that is almost like a prey model diet.
I would do some more detailed reading on the raw diet Brian.
There are plenty of good books here at LB, not to mention try an copy the feeding routine here from LB.
In order to be a good and complete diet, you need organ meats in there too.

Brian, can you get the list of vitamins and minerals that is in Sojo's. Michael is right, you definitely want not just feed raw meat only. Let's see what is in the other grain free food you were feeding.

Ok found it:
Sojo's grain free dehydrated food contains:
The grain-free alternative to kibble, Sojos Grain-Free Dog Food Mix (formerly known as Sojos Europa) is a wholesome pre-mix that you combine with meat and water to create a fresh, homemade dog food. Sojos Grain-Free works great for dogs with sensitivities to grains, and also as a great fruit and vegetable supplement to our other mixes. When mixed with meat and water, 1 lb. of SOJOS GRAIN-FREE makes approximately 7 lbs. of fresh, raw dog food.Click here to learn more.
Ingredients: Sweet Potatoes, Carrots, Broccoli, Celery, Apples, Whole Egg, Flax Meal, Parsley Leaf, Calcium Carbonate, Carob Powder, Kelp Powder, Alfalfa, Ginger Root, Garlic
It appears it has some calcium in it, so that is a good thing.
However, I am unsure if calcium carbonate is completely sufficient or not.
I can only assume that it must have to be, to be marketed as they do.
It appears to be similar to Honest Kitchen.

Brian, Have you noticed anything "off" with your dog? What brought you to Leerburg and posting about your pup's diet?
Welcome, by the way. Michael and Connie will take good care of you!
