I tried to look around but I don't seem to be able to locate the answer to this. My l.5 year old terrier started eating everything in sight, especially leaves, grass, flowers, etc. at the beginning of the summer. Now looking back I also think that's when her UTI started. I just did not recognize the signs which were subtle then. I changed her diet several times to see if the wrong diet was the culprit. Now that we finally figured it out she is on an antibiotic. I am not sure it is working since she woke up today at 4 am (again!) and needed to go out. She has been on an antibiotic since Monday. My question is, her urine ph is 8. Is it possible she is eating the grass to balance this? I read several threads about UTI but did not see this anywhere.
No idea about the PH thing, but dogs who eat everything are at major risk of injesting something indigestable that has to be removed $$$$$$$$$urgically.
I'm sure Dr. Betty (Leerburg member) has all kinds of stories about things she's removed from the digestive tracts of mutts. Some dog owners are left with no choice other than to manage the dog's access to bad stuff they eat.
Good luck.
A dog has alot of friends because he wags his tail instead of his mouth.
Our Westie would go around obsessively eating dirt, dust bunnies and just about anything he could lick off the carpet. He seemed to do it when his stomach was empty too long and he was to the vomiting phlegm stage. We learned to time his meals better and he was fine.
Never did he have a UTI
On the topic of pH....my BC bitch can not eat chicken or chicken based kibble for more than a few days or her pH shifts and she gets a UTI. So she gets lamb and rice kibble. So I guess I would wonder if you are changing kibbles around that have the same pH or protein base and therefore not shifting her pH maybe?
Yes, OCD is what I would call it in this case too. I try my hardest to prevent it but if she is on the lawn it's a constant "leave it". I will have to look at the ingredients. She was on Orijen and then I went to two different kinds of Honest Kitchen and back on Orijen. So I have to check the ingredients and see. The vet said to put her on s/d if it does not get better. Thanks!
