A smaller crate won't fit properly in our car. We had to get a minivan
The easiest way would be for you to take the crate to a rental or used car lot and ask to try the most common models and then contact the rental at the location and ask them for a model that fits the crate.
eta: The back seats are designed for sitting, a crate will sit tilted and rock while the car is moving.
Much simpler to get an SUV. You'll have a much more pleasant trip
An SUV or a minivan has better ventilation and stays cooler IME.
The other advantage of having dog in crate in rental car is so the dog hair doesn't get all over the place and less likely chance of getting hit with the $200 cleaning fee.
