Hello-
I have a 12 week old GS puppy that has a bout of diarrhea, and it is "pudding". He has He has had it for 2 days now, but had it last week on and off again. What is the best remedy for him? I have been using boiled brown rice, cooked chicken breasts, and a little plain yogurt. I am feeding much smaller portions throughout the day(4x a day)and not such big amount at once. He had been fed 3x a day. He had firmer stools earlier, but now has the mucous looking stools, and then "pudding". How long to keep my little guy on this diet? Just started the chicken/rice/yougurt today. He has been on Taste of the Wild(which I am returning when I can get to the store)and I am tempted to quit it cold turkey and just go raw, but want this issue resolved first of course.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
Melissa

A switch to TOTW (or Evo or similar) can trigger diarrhea, especially if the switch is done suddenly and even more especially if the meals are too big.
Make the rice soupy, with the grains almost not discernable.
I didn't know you had just started it today (referring to our PM about starting a thread here).
The small frequent meals are good. You might omit the yogurt until Day 2, starting very simple.
None of this applies to the rice diet, right? "He had firmer stools earlier, but now has the mucous looking stools, and then "pudding." "
Has he had a poop since the rice started?
What was he eating before TOTW?
When was the last log poop?

I went cold turkey with both of my dogs when I went raw.
But I know that many on this forum would like to see the stools firm up before getting into all raw. That said, when I first went raw I chose to start on the Nature's Variety patties until I learned all about how to feed raw correctly.
For me, I have always had great results with using plain canned pure pumpkin about a teaspoon for your pup and mixing in either the high quality yogurt and/or probiotic powder into that.
At least it is more pudding consistency than watery as that is more dangerous to a young pup.
I like to make sure the dog is staying hydrated so I like to make my own boiled chicken, save the water and cool and then feed the baited water. If ever you have a dog that has watery stools, you can also add plain Pedi-Lyte to this chicken broth and it will help a lot.
Has the pup had a fecal turned in to the vet to see if anything is going on there?
Did this food Taste of the Wild give your dog the troubles or have you changed food recently?

Connie-
I am just giving up on the TOTW and going to do chicken/rice/yougurt(later) for now. Poor Kaiser!!
You are right about the "He had firmer stools earlier, but now has the mucous looking stools, and then "pudding." None of that was with the rice diet. He has just had a little "pudding" today and last night he had more and had to be taken outside more than the regular times, so I will wait to see firmer stools before proceeding. As of this posting nothing more to report. He feels like he needs to go, but nothing comes of it.
How long can a puppy be on this diet before firm stools can be seen? Or is it "to each puppy is different?"
The rice is very soupy, almost like mush and then the chicken is not cooked to death, but cooked enough for human comsumtion, and Vita Mixed to be shredded.
I think I have been giving him too big of meals because he has had TOTW mixed with his kibble from the breeder, and there were no problems until the kibble from the breeder was gone (which was just cheap Purina of all things!!), then it was "pudding".
What should I switch to when his "pudding" is gone?
Thanks!

Joyce-
I think it was the TOTW that started this. I will try the canned pumpkin again- tried it once before, but maybe used too much.
I have not had a fecal turned into the vet, because this just appeared on and off again about a week ago. He has had days of firm stools and then not so firm, so I am blaming the food.
He does drink plenty of water and is urinating well, too. Kaiser is still energetic, too, so I am not worried there. I am keeping it low key for him though, not too long of walks-so he can be near his own lawn to use the bathroom!
Thanks!!

Does Vita Mix just mean "processed"? It's not a supplement, right?

.... How long .... before firm stools can be seen? .... What should I switch to when his "pudding" is gone? ....
Don't worry. We will stick with you and keep you advised.
I think you will see an improvement as soon as tomorrow if you make sure he has small frequent meals and (for now) no treats except maybe poached white chicken in tiny bits.
It does sound like overfeeding (common) of a high-protein food.
I probably wouldn't return it. I'd just get the poops sorted out and then begin with a gradual switch in smaller meals. We won't let it turn to pudding because at the first sign of softer poops, you'll back up to the last level where the poops were logs.

Oops .... I mean (when I say I probably wouldn't return it) - unless you decide on raw.
Also, Joyce mentioned "For me, I have always had great results with using plain canned pure pumpkin about a teaspoon for your pup," and yes, I should have mentioned that. Do you still have some? (Make sure it's just one ingredient: pumpkin.)

Connie- My Vita Mix is my super blender that makes everything!! It sure makes everything much more convenient.
I "trained" him today with nothing but the chicken cut into bite size pieces.
I just fed him another meal of rice/chicken/and the pumpkin. He will have another meal before bed and that will make 4 small meals today. Hopefully we will see results from this.
Thanks!
