I recently found a local source for reasonably priced grassfed/organic beef and pork to feed as part of my dog's raw diet. I can get muscle meats, liver and heart and am going to be asking about different parts (pork neck bones, kidney, tongue) next time I get some.
Doing the math the above products can make up about 50% of my dog's diet and I can still keep my cost at about $1/#. Remainder will be the usual chicken/turkey quarters, backs, necks. It'll be interesting to see if I see any changes with her allergy issues as grass fed meat contains more omega 3 fatty acids. And no growth hormones or antibiotics. I do really love the idea of a more natural, locally raised meat. And since my mom's chickens recently started laying she'll get those from time to time as well.
LOL! I am very much a meat eater - just can't afford to eat much of the really good stuff right now . But I think picking up a little something for me each time I stop is a very good idea - you know positive reinforcement to encourage me to keep feeding my dog well
I feed my dogs mostly free-range beef and chicken. Buying sides of beef and a dozen or so whole chickens becomes fairly economical. I don't know who/what your source is, but if you can buy direct from farmers you'll save some money.
