Zuki was outside this morning like all other mornings. I brought her in 3-4 hours ago and she looked fine. She slept for a while and when she woke up her eyes are both swollen. Mostly the right one but the other one is also. Bee bite? Should I just leave it or can you give Benadrill to dogs? Other things? She is still a acting like a nut (normal) but they are obviously bothering her.
Here are a few pics http://s802.photobucket.com/albums/yy307/bitslittle/Zuki%20eye/?action=view¤t=zuki058.jpg
If it were me I would contact my vet and touch base...ask them a dose for benedryl. That way you get some help and they are aware.
I have a dog that swipes parrot seed mix and something in it sets him into hives within half an hour....we dose him the full 2mg/# first dose and down after that. He swells up all over though....so just eyes could be low end dose.
Can I ask why you don't have a vet? Are you travelling?
One of the most important relationships I have is the one with my vet. She knows my dogs inside and out; has been there since day one for all of them. When I am travelling, I let her know and I am always welcome to call her if I encounter a problem.
If it's an emergency issue, the local emergency vets that I have encountered have been more than helpful.
I would call a vet before giving my dogs any medication or treatment that I am not sure of. I may THINK I know, but I won't risk my dog's life for anything.

Just my opinion of course.
Yes I am always traveling... I haven't needed a vet but a couple times in my life and when I did I was in Guatemala. I do it mostly as I need it. Problem is I have not found a vet that I trusted with my dogs life. I wouldn't give something without real cause and than only after really looking into it. I once had a vet give me a bottle of injectable meds that was for cows and he told me to give it to a one month old pup by mouth for parvo. The pup died because it was not curable but there was no way I was going to try that stuff. In the US all I get is "you have to come in" And most of my time is out of the US so I just have not found anyone that I feel could do any better. There is one vet here in Monterrey and I have confidence that he will do what he knows but I don't think he knows a lot...Just really quick with injections and meds.
The swelling is going down and I did nothing, however if it would have continued I would be looking into things.
Next best thing... do you have a friend or relative that has a reliable vet? I have asked my vet questions on a friend's behalf...
If you ever settle in one place for any length of time, I would really look into developing a good relationship with a trustworthy vet. Then, when something happens in the future, you have someone to turn to.
Believe me, I have called my vet more than once and she's saved my dog's life (and my sanity) over the phone. Things happen like Toni ripping her toe nail out on Thanksgiving Day, or Caterina's tail getting caught in the car door. We certainly don't plan on these things, but it's nice to have someone to turn to if they do happen.
Sounds like the swelling is going away on its own. If the dog is uncomfortable but not in danger I would use some cool, wet cloths on the eyes.
This just happened to my moms papillon mix and it turned out he had 2 absessed teeth. Funny thing is is that he still chews his chewy bones ......... LOL
The abcessed teeth is a really good point, especially if the swelling represents it's self in the future. I hope it was just a bug or spider bite that she didn't like, and you never see it again! Still, heavily consider finding a vet you'd trust in an emergency to at least call for an opinion. They are worth their weight in gold.
I think the cause is fire ants... This morning after I had taken her out I saw a hold she had been working on... Freshly dug in, I took a closer look and saw it had a bunch of ants (she dug into the nest) So she had swollen patches on her nose and around the left eye this morning. I made her chain so that it could not reach that spot any more...
Are all dogs this reactive to ants? Could she develop worse allergic reactions in the future if it ever happens again?
