Rambo just turned 7 months and has been crate trained since he was 9 weeks old. At home he does not mind the crate at all, we leave him in there whenever we leave the house or are too busy to watch him and he never barks. The only time we hear him in there is if he needs to be let out in the AM for potty and even then its a single short bark.

We went on vacation this month and little Rambo was a TERROR. He barked NOT-STOP the entire time we left him alone in the room (crated). We figured he would get tired and quit but he didn't. He kept at it until he was hoarse and could barely make any noise, but he kept at it! Same story in all 3 cities. We got home and he is totally fine in the crate, what the heck can we do??


We put him in the crate for a little while and stayed in the room to get him relaxed before we went. We positioned his crate in a quiet part of the room, turned on the tv for him, turned off the lights, what more can we do? We walked him so he didn't have to do any business. The Kong I gave him didn't shut him up either once we left. PLEASE HELP. We travel frequently so this is a horrible problem.

When you have a pup that is already a little stressed with the travelling it can sometimes lead to some anxiety when left alone.

So here is how I start when I have a young dog in a new place where he is going to be left alone.

I try to time my check in to the hotel so that I am going to stay there for several hours (just before bed). I also make sure that I have run my dog and that I have done some age appropriate OB BEFORE I get to the hotel. When I get there, before I unpack any of my things, then I set up the crate and do some marker training (just like when you first introduce him to the crate).
So this should consist of throwing food in and letting them take the food and come back out, putting food on top of the crate and letting them take each time marking with "Yes". I do this for a few minutes but I don't overdo it. Then the dog goes into the crate, I cover the crate and go about getting my stuff out, showering, watching TV....basically whatever you want.

Then we usually go out before bed, and then the dog eats in the covered crate, then sleeps in the covered crate.

The next morning you do your usual routine and then put the dog in his crate (tired!) and then leave.

So I make sure that when I am in the hotel room the dog is crated sometimes too (not at all times) so that when I leave it is nothing new for him to be in the crate in the hotel room.

Leaving the TV can be a good idea if it drowns out some of the other noises, and it can also drown out his barking for the neighbors

If this does not work, you may have to simulate leaving the room and then coming right back in and marking and rewarding for silence.

As a last resort, I would teach the "quiet" command using marker training, then use an ecollar from outside the room to correct him for barking - he is a little young for this, but if it is between you not being able to take him or getting kicked out of the hotel, then I would chose this if all else fails.
