hi everyone,
i'm a little new here, so take it easy.
i need to correct some dominance problems i'm having with my 1yr old greyhound. she has growled, shown her teeth, and bit 2 times (minor bites). i've made huge mistakes that were unknown before finding the leerburg web site. i am in the process of making all necessary corretions in the way we handle saffy (our grey). i've read the domince article, purchased the basic obedience tape and am following all recomendations on rules i've seen on this site. my question is this, if i am going to use a collar for teaching and training my grey for basic obedience, which collar would work better....or is there another collar that i should be using? she is stubborn, as most grey's are and has a long neck, soft skin and a thin coat of hair. this is why i am leaning against a prong collar. advice please on which one to select. her neck just below the ears, where the collar should go measures at 14.5", should i then order a 15" collar, or a 16" collar?
thanks,
max

Perhaps an ecollar, with the very shortest contact points available? I've seen fantastic results using the ecollar with my dog, and have found that it's quite humane and provides excellent "communication" between dog and handler. It's like we're both speaking the same language now. Lou Castle, who frequents this board, has really helped us out in using our collar; he's also posted some great "get started" articles on his website.
We have to use the very long contact points, as Ceili has a thick double coat and some redundant skin on the neck. With a grey that's obviously not going to be a problem!

as most grey's are and has a long neck, soft skin and a thin coat of hair. this is why i am leaning against a prong collar. I don't see what's wrong with a Prong Collar. I say that you should first try using a Prong collar and advance to an e-collar if you find the need.

You can put rubber tips over the ends of the prongs...would that work?

how long have you had the dog? advice would be different if you had her since she was a pup vs she just arrived as an off-the-track rescue.

You can really tailor a prong collar to fit most dogs' needs. If you attach the lead to the "dead ring", meaning BOTH rings, instead of just the large one, then the collar will not tighten on the dog, it will only feel pressure directly from your correction. As was previously mentioned, rubber tips can be put on the prongs. But if you feel a prong collar, the tips are not very sharp to begin with. I'm willing to bet even a grey hound has thicker sking than a person. Just be sure to read Ed's article, if you havn't already, on fitting a prong collar.
Best of luck with the dog.

I say get the stainless steel prong collar from Herm Sprenger Product # 880-3. If it's a bit big you can always remove a link.
