Out of sheer curiosity, how would one go about training a dog to find bedbugs? I am asking because of all these articles about bedbug-sniffing dogs. Do they actually have to have LIVE bedbugs to learn this? Just the thought of having bedbugs absolutely gives me the heebeejeebees! I don't think I will be training this any time soon, just wondering.
It's totally creeping me out too, but the part of me that loves money and has a dog with a great sniffer is admittedly intrigued by the idea. The numbers of these icky creepie-crawlies is on the rise, big time. There may be some benefit to this training, from a monetary perspective or even only from a 'reassurance' point of view. At the very least it would be something new for the dog to do.
Hmmm.....I wonder where I could procure some of these offensive little buggers...
I think any of the extermination businesses might be a potential source. We also have a company here trueheat.com that destroys them with heat. If you can find someone like that I am sure eventually someone would help you out in getting these things. True Heat published an article some time ago saying they do about three jobs a week. Somewhere else I read that the rates are about $250.00 for a 1,200 sq ft house and $10,000 for a mall. Do five malls a year and you are set. In another article a girl said she got laid off and bought a trained dog for $9,700 and started her own business. So the market is definitely out there.

I've done some investigation into this and am thinking about getting a trained dog from these guys in another year or so: http://fsik9.com I talked with them on the phone and they were really nice and helpful.
